Greyhounds are racing to Gettysburg this week for the 17th installment of the highly anticipated Greyhounds in Gettysburg. Taking place April 23 through 26, Greyhounds in Gettysburg now holds the title for being the largest greyhound reunion in the entire country.
In 2014 alone, more than 950 people preregistered for this event, and over a thousand visitors attended., Greyhound lovers from all over the nation come out to be a part of it all. Every year Greyhounds in Gettysburg grows, and the 2015 installment promises even more venues, speakers, vendors, and other highlights.
The four-day event will be packed with activities and events that dogs and humans will both be wagging about. Ongoing events may be found at the Allstar Family Center and include: games (Laser tag, Go karts, and Mini Golf), doggie daycare, Off-Leash Play Area, poop stations, and Houndstooth Pet Dental (for non-anesthetic teeth cleaning). Greyhounds in Gettysburg will have an official kickoff on Thursday, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Outlet Shoppes with Super Shopper Extravaganza. Enjoy special deals just for you, along with a goodie bag, refreshments, and other surprises. Most stores will gladly welcome both you and your “fur babies” inside any venue to explore. Merchants throughout downtown Gettysburg will also be offering up a bone of great deals, (and a fresh, complimentary water bowl) to welcome in four-legged friends between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Battlefield Harley Davidson will bring you a Hogs n’ Dogs Welcome Reception and Free Raffle (hosted by the Greyhound Way). Come out and enjoy this relaxed, fun-filled event with free hotdogs, drinks, and a chance to win at the free raffle. The evening will conclude with the special Ghosts and Fire; Blessings and Celebrations event at 8 p.m. For this event, you will light the pathway to the fire ring with luminaries, dedicated to loved ones. Whether you have pre-ordered the luminaries or will be purchasing them onsite ($5), all materials will be provided for you to decorate, write on, and personalize your very own. A short celebration will follow (you may take your luminary home if you choose), and Mayor Troxel will arrive at 9 p.m. for the official Welcome to Gettysburg and Blessing of the Hounds.
On Friday, April 24, there will be many activities going on including an early Battlefield Walk taking place from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Then, most of the day’s activities and events will occur within the Allstar Family Center beginning with registration at 10 a.m. Then, up through 4 p.m., you can enjoy a host of vendors, activities, speakers, and much, much more. Special guests featured on Friday will include: John Kitto, Michael Owens, Ken Karmie, and Susan Morse. The staff from the Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert, from Seville, Spain, will also be in attendance, enlightening attendees about the current state of affais of Galgos and other sighthounds in Spain. There will be a Reception for Adoption Groups taking place at the Eisenhower Hotel from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. This will be followed by a pre-banquet reception at 5:30 p.m. and then the banquet at 6 p.m. in the Grand Ball Room.
The fun gets started early on Saturday with an Art Shop workshop with Linda Evans in the Allstar cafeteria from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Check-in time begins at 9 a.m. and so continues the shopping, raffles, vendors, and activities. Agility and Fun Dog Game Demonstrations will take place from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., followed by the long-anticipated Costume Contest and Parade. Hosted by Italian Greyhounds in Gettysburg, you and your hounds are cordially invited to dress in your best costumes and line up in the Activities Area for a parade around the Expo Hall at 10 a.m. (arrive early to line up). The precession will end at the Off Leash Play area for judging in the following categories: Best Military Theme, Most Amusing, Most Creative, and Best of the Rest. There will be $50 cash prizes awarded in each category. Following the parade, there will be Greyhound tricks at 10:30 a.m. and many other events. Featured guests on Saturday will include: Neil Brogan, Dennis Tyler, Dr. Fred Metzger, Dr. Guillermo Couto, and Megan Sanchez. The raffle ticket winners will be posted at 2 p.m. At 5 p.m., be sure to head to the Allstar Family Fun Center Lake for the 2015 GIG Family photo. Other events that evening include a private reception sponsors, speakers, and special guests at 5 p.m. and the Brew & The Grey wine sampling event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Six local breweries will offer samples and tastings and will also be selling their products by the bottle. In addition to wines, non-alcoholic beverages such as soda and water will be offered as well. There will also be a barbeque dinner available for purchase, hosted by the Eisenhower Hotel. Another raffle will take place at this time too, and a musician will be onsite providing live entertainment. Weather permitting, Greyt Expectations will host an Ice Cream Social featuring ice cream for both you and your hound.
Sunday will wrap up with the Blur of Fur Speed Run in the Off Leash Play Area from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Then, a closing ceremony will take place at The Brew & The Grey Tent at 10:30 a.m.
