After examining the eight Class AAAA sections, here are the eight in Class AAA.
The top two seeds in Section 1 are former Missota Conference rivals the Red Wing Wingers and the New Prague Trojans. The Wingers are back in the Big Nine conference and the Trojans had plenty of long bus rides since joining the Wright County Conference. The two teams played each other on December 20 with Red Wing on top 64-62. Could their be a rematch in the section final?
Could 2015 be the year for Marshall Tigers Basketball? While the girls are having a successful season, the boys could also make the trip to Minneapolis in March. But first they will have to get by the second seeded Mankato West Scarlets and the third seeded Mankato East Cougars. The X Factor in this section is the M Factor. Which one of these M teams get an A+ for their tournament success?
There’s a familiar ring to Section 3. The top seed is the DeLaSalle Islanders. Last season, the Reid Travis led Islanders won their third straight Class AAA title. Now Travis is at Stanford but there is a lot of talent for veteran head coach Dave Thorson in Gopher signee Jamar Johnson and Sacar Anim. Can they go for four in a row? The pairing have not yet benn released but you can be that the black and gold from Minneapolis is the big favorite.
Over in Section 4, the St. Paul Johnson Governors are the top seed but on their heels are the second seeded Hill-Murray Pioneers, the third seeded St. Thomas Academy Cadets and the fourth seeded Simley Spartants. It’s a very competitive section so who will come out on top?
What a season for Orono Spartans basketball. The girls team is the number one team in Class AAA and the boys are the top seed in Section 5. However, they will have to get past a hot Rocori Spartans who are on a 16 game winning streak. Naate Guetter is having an outstanding season taking over for long-time head coach Bob Brink. Will the section final be the “Battle of the Spartans?”
There’s only one dominant team in Section 6 and that’s the top seeded Minneapolis Washburn Millers. They are the only team in the section with a winning record and they’re on a seven game winning streak. At the .500 mark are the second seeded Waconia Wildcats and the third seeded Holy Family Catholic Fire.
In Section 7, the seeds have not been determined but the top three seeds could be the Chisago Lakes Wildcats, the Hermantown Hawks and the Cloquet Lumberjacks. It’s been an outstanding winter sports season in the Twin Ports with the Proctor/Hermantown girls hockey team advancing to the Section 7A final and the boys hockey team one win away from returning to the state tournament. It should be an interesting section.
And in Section 8, the top seed is the Detroit Lakes Lakers. Also in the running are the second seeded Alexandria Cardinals and the third seeded Albany Huskies. Another section to keep your eye on.
