For many, eating candy is the start of the slippery slope of overindulging. Giving in to the temptations of of candy activates areas of the brain to produce neurotransmitters like dopamine (master switch of food addiction) that can drive us drive us to overeat.
In a recent article, we looked at how manufactures take advantage of our desire to eat healthy by incorporating mischievous marketing messages into their advertising to “suggest” a health benefit and how this can hijack our potential for eating healthy. Hershey’s Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup 1 pound gift package was the example. With 12 servings in one the entire package it yields 2,280 calories 132 grams fat and 240 grams sugar (1.25 cups sugar) and the bars are not scored so it’s your guess as to what a portion looks like. Without some sort of visual cue (offered in a one serving portion size, scored into portions, etc.)
Mindless eating can easily lead to overeating and some may consider mindless eating as potentially dangerous.

Ironically during Halloween often articles take a contrary approach. One that surfaces every year since article originally posted in 2011, titled 20 better Halloween Candy Choices, includes 7 of the same candy brands in the 21 most dangerous article, giving justification to indulge for those who simply cannot resist the temptation of candy … portion control is emphasized.
The author does however state that ” it’s all still sugar-filled candy and inherently unhealthy, but sometimes there’s no avoiding that sweet tooth.”
The question is – do we want to eat something that is inherently unhealthy to satisfy a “sweet tooth”, rather than something a bit healthier; a topic for another blog on why we justify non health promoting habits when it is something we enjoy and rather not do without.
