The infamous Koch brothers have stated that they like a handful of candidates from the Republican field for the presidency. Problem for those hopefuls is figuring out how to get the money an endorsement will guarantee. Of course, there’s the easy way – let the voters decide, since it’s likely that no matter what, the elected candidate will get the money in the general election. Then there’s the hard way, which arguably could get them more votes anyway – offer something positive on the campaign trail, and not just rhetoric.
Here are three options for the candidates to consider:
Offer a real alternative for Obamacare – Sure, there’s a temporary fix that looks an awful lot like Obamacare coming from Republicans already. People will get subsidies, but they’ll be called “tax credits” now. Remember when people could choose the kind of coverage they wanted? How about that idea that included selling policies across state lines? If you really dug deep, maybe you could even allow insurance companies to offer products like they sold in the 1970’s and earlier, before the rise of HMO’s. (That was when it really was “health insurance,” not pre-paying for health care.)
Immigration reform not amnesty – The focus has been on illegal immigrants that are already in the U.S., which means that no one is focusing on why they keep coming. No, this isn’t a call for building a fence. Yes, it is a suggestion that maybe it is time to look at the problems with legal immigration. It also might not hurt to talk a little bit about the possibility of returning to some of the “alien worker” procedures that were essentially abandoned after 9/11. In case you’re wondering, the Koch brothers are probably for anything that focuses on building business, so any plan that talks about providing workers for industry is a good thing. It also wouldn’t hurt to talk seriously about cutting some red tape, and clearing backlogs in our immigration offices. As for the illegal immigrants? Test the waters. They came here illegally, and previously had been left in limbo as a kind of punishment for breaking the law. Who knows? If you come up with something that radically increases the efficiency of our legal immigration system, we might see illegal immigrants leave temporarily. Maybe they’ll figure it’s better to just leave the country, and come back later legally.
Civil Asset Forfeiture
End abuse of Civil Asset Forfeiture – This should be a no-brainer. Of course the Koch brothers are opposed to government just grabbing assets, without even filing criminal charges. As a matter of fact, there are quite a few Democrats that are opposed to it as well. Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch is the face of that government overreach. Take advantage of that. Also, doesn’t hurt to think that getting rid of her will be a perk in 2017, provided a Republican ends up in the White House. Unfortunately, you can’t rely on the current Senate to keep her out. For the candidates that are currently senators, it’s time to talk with your friends in the House about a bill or three to at least put some limits on this abuse of power. This is one area where you can “put up, or shut up.”
