MÉRIDA, YUCATÁN – It turns out there is a very ‘Canadian’ way to make a cheeseburger. Who knew? And the lucky residents of Mérida, Yucatán have the chance to taste this unique style, thanks to Canada Burger’s two city locations.
Local resident Canadians, Mark Miller and Scott Jaspar, driven by “a love of food and a love of Canada” decided to combine their two passions, and drawing on a background in the food service business, they conceived the concept for a Canadian themed burger joint here in Yucatan, opening a ‘food cart’ operation in the upscale neighborhood of Montes de Amé in October 2013.
The menu consists of two flagship items; the Canadian style cheeseburger, and poutine, a creation from Quebec, popular across Canada. Also offered are a mini burger, a double cheeseburger, a bacon cheeseburger, and (combining the two flagship items) a poutine cheeseburger!
The cheeseburger begins with a toasted bun, brushed with melted butter. A choice of mustard, mayonnaise, ranch dressing, ketchup, or Canada Burger’s signature maple barbecue sauce is offered, and the piping hot off the grill patty is stuffed with a secret mixture of four cheeses, making for delightful oozing when bitten. An additional slice of cheese graces the top, and crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, onion, jalapeño and pickles are available for topping the burger, which is then wrapped for easy eating.
Poutine – for those of us unfamiliar with this Canadian treat – is French fries, topped with cheese curds and beef gravy, and Canada Burger’s poutine is indeed sublime. Other sides include regular fries, or the light option of a fresh salad. The cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, poutine cheeseburger and bacon cheeseburger are available in combos, including poutine and a drink, and the poutine can be substituted for regular fries or a salad if desired.
Soft drinks available (“pop” in Canadian) are Coke, Coke light and zero, and to the delight of many, Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke, Root Beer and Cream Soda.
Not to forget about dessert, large soft chewy chocolate chip cookies, as well as “Blondies” – white chocolate brownies, topped with maple frosting, available in half or full size (my mouth is watering just writing this) – are on offer at both locations!
After more than a year of successful operation in Montes de Amé, Canada Burger recently opened a second location in Mérida, this time in Pensiones, next to Wal-Mart Plaza Dorada. This one is a little different from the original, since it is a restaurant, rather than a food cart, and features indoor and outdoor seating, air-conditioning, Canadian music, and plenty of parking. What hasn’t changed however is the food – the same great menu of made fresh to order Canadian style burgers, fries, and poutine is on offer at the new restaurant along with Canada Burger’s friendly service and great value.
Currently the Pensiones location is open from Monday to Saturday, 7.00pm until midnight; expanded opening hours will be coming soon, as will home delivery from this location. The Montes de Amé location is open from Monday to Saturday, from 1pm until midnight.
Canada Burger plans to open at least one more restaurant in Mérida this year, bringing the experience to an ever wider clientèle.
