On Wednesday the 10th of December in 2014, Splunk hosted an exclusive Splunk>Live! event at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. It was the biggest all in one IT User Group and Trade-show event of this Winter with well over two hundred attendees. Who knew one establishment could hold so many IT professionals in one building. Talk about a powerhouse of congregating IT professionals! Splunk is a one stop shop for Information Technology concerning everything IT from Application Management, Big Data Solutions, Cloud Solutions, Digital Intelligence, IT Operations Management, Internet of Things and more.
The day conference took place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. offering attendees insight into the way Splunk indexes and makes searchable data from any application, server or network device in real time including logs, config files, messages, alerts, scripts and metrics.
The event schedule began with early morning coffee and continental breakfast during registration. Next was main session began whereas, a promotional Splunk commercial video was played. Then Pike Reynolds, Director of Sales for Splunk gave a great introduction and overview of the agenda for the day. Several other Splunk representatives spoke and give educational Splunk demos for about hour and half. The Splunk demo presentations were so informative.
Then, there was a fifteen minute break. Around 10:30 a.m. came the cool stuff whereas, three major Splunk customer representatives from the following companies: Social Security Administration, Airline Tariff and Publishing Company and The World Bank gave presentations based on how and why they use Splunk software and services. The customer presentations were the highlight of the conference and very knowledgeable, I might add. All attendees learned the best practices from those presenters firsthand as to how the operational visibility Splunk provides helps them move from reactive to proactive. Then, most of the attendees enjoyed a buffet style lunch which was deliciously prepared in a holiday festive decorated ballroom at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore. The Asian inspired cuisine was flowing from every corner of the ballroom.
The second half of the day included smaller group discussion sessions.
The 1:15 p.m. session topics included:
- Getting Started with Splunk Enterprise
- Splunk Ninjas: New Features, Pivot and Search Dojo
- Splunk for Security
The 2:30 p.m. session topics included:
- New Splunk Application Management Solutions for a Cloud and Mobile-First World
- Leverage Splunk and Exabeam to find User Impersonation
The coolest part of it all was the great opportunity to network with other IT professionals and learn what’s working at other leading organizations. During the conference attendees were allowed to collect cool Splunk t-shirts to take home. Oh, did I mention all attendees could mix and mingle throughout the day with approximately ten different tech exhibitors in the exhibit hall. There were awesome keepsakes and prize giveaways in the exhibit hall as well.

The event ended with a complimentary Happy Hour in the Foyer at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore. I did not attend Happy Hour nevertheless; I can imagine how cool it was because the other networking aspects of the conference rocked.
