Ace Hotel and Warner Bros. Pictures are collaborating to bring the world of Inherent Vice, Paul Thomas Anderson’s surf noir, psychedelic romp based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon, to Ace Hotel in LA, NY and London.
Inherent Vice, the novel, was advertised by the publisher as “part-noir, part-psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon—private eye Doc Sportello comes, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era as free love slips away and paranoia creeps in with the L.A. fog
A special preview of the movie will be held on Monday, December 1st at the Theatre at Ace Hotel DTLA. Director Paul Thomas Anderson and actors Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom will also be in attendance.
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph, and Martin Short. It is the first feature film adapted from a work by Pynchon. The film premiered at the 2014 New York Film Festival and is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on December 12, 2014. The Film Music Reporter confirmed that Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood composed the music for the film. His score was be recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. This is the third time Greenwood has scored an Anderson film; the first two being There Will Be Blood and The Master. An unreleased Radiohead song called “Spooks” appears on the soundtrack, as do recordings from the late 1960s by Neil Young, Can, and The Marketts, among others. The soundtrack will be released by Nonesuch Records on December 16.
The screening will be open to guests at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, who will get a gratis ticket to see the invite-only screening before it premieres nationwide. The event will also be open to fans that will have a chance to RSVP through the Inherent Vice official site and social media channels. (http://inherentvicemovie.com)
The LA screening is the first initiative in this creative partnership, which will include gallery exhibitions at Ace Hotel in London, New York and Downtown Los Angeles in January. For hotel guests, there will also be custom vinyl’s of the film score by Jonny Greenwood.
