Parenting isn’t usually a laughing matter. But perhaps it should be.
Becoming a parent is actually kind of scary. Though it has been a while for me, I remember well how my husband and I stood anxiously over our son as we prepared to change his diaper for the first time. Yes, it took two of us.
We laugh about it now, but perhaps knowing others have the same fears would have eased our tension. At least a little.
Looking at all of the new parenting discoveries with a dose of humor is what actress Jenna von Oy is trying to do with her new book. Known for her roles as Six on “Blossom” and Stevie on “The Parkers,” von Oy has teamed with a Chicago-area indie publisher to produce her humorous look at pregnancy and beyond.
This November, she and Medallion Press (dba Medallion, Inc.) will release her parenting book titled “Situation Momedy: A First-Time Mom’s Guide to Laughing Your Way Through Pregnancy & Year One.”
“I think honesty and vulnerability can go a long way toward helping other moms feel less alone in the chaos of the mommy learning curve,” she said in a recent statement. “In releasing ‘Situation Momedy,’ I hope to inspire women to embrace the tough times with extra love and laughter, and to be empowered to trust their own instincts!”
When von Oy was preparing for her first daughter a few years ago, she went in search of a down-to-earth parenting guide. Much of what she found were clinical how-to books.
Her book is a little different. Some of her chapter names include “Houston, We Have a Pregnancy,” “This Is Your Brain on Baby,” “Bringing Sexy Back,” and “All’s Fair in Love and Mommy Wars.”
“I’m not the first woman to have kids, and there will certainly be countless mothers after me, so my book isn’t an attempt to reinvent the wheel or deliver a ‘how-to’ on all things mommy-related,” she said. “I’m still a work in progress, too!”
Books will be available for purchase through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, and major retail locations.
