Ahrre’s Coffee Roastery is marking 25 years in business, and the public is invited to join the celebration. In honor of its anniversary, Ahrre’s is serving free coffee by the cup at both its Westfield and Summit locations from Monday, February 9 until Sunday, February 15, 2015.
Roastmaster Ahrre Maros, a native of Summit, opened the first Ahrre’s Coffee Roastery in Cranford in 1990, and his second location at 104 Elm Street in Westfield two years later. In 1993, he opened his third location in his hometown of Summit.
But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing; Maros closed the Cranford location in 1994, and competition from Starbucks slowly put the Summit location out of business as well. With just the Westfield location to run, Maros developed his web-business and kept it simple for a while. Then, in August of 2012, 15 years and 4 days after the original Summit location closed, Maros re-opened a second Ahrre’s Coffee Roastery in Summit,
“It’s been a difficult road, with Starbucks popping up everywhere and offering something shiny and slick, but I stuck it out,” said Maros. “I think that …nowadays people are more interested in unique and locally owned establishments. Basically I stayed in the game long enough for the rules to change in my favor!”
