Mike Aleshire defeated top-seeded Michael Clark Jr. 236-207 to win the final-five stepladder finals in Sunday’s (Feb. 22) 700-Plus Singles And Virtual Doubles Tournament at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes.
In the scratch singles competition — open to Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association bowlers who have rolled a 700-plus three-game series — Clark topped the leaderboard in qualifying with a pinfall of 654, while Aleshire was runner-up with 651. Rounding out the top five were Robert Oden (614), Jerry Tucciarone Jr. (606) and Chuck Souzer (569).
Souzer won the first stepladder match, defeating Tucciarone 182-153, but Oden eliminated Souzer with a 244-233 in the subsequent match. Aleshire then defeated Oden 254-228 in the semifinal to advance to the title match against Clark.
Preston Willis was victorious in the handicap singles competition, open to SMCBA bowlers who haven’t rolled a 700-plus series over the past four years. Willis posted the top score of 752, while Theresa Cassidy was runner-up at 706, and Ana Thristino and Luke Smith tied for third place at 654.
Clark and Willis teamed to win the virtual doubles, matching one player who has rolled a 700-plus series and one who hasn’t done so over the past four years. The Clark-Willis tandem totaled 1,449, while Willis and Souzer were second at 1,393. Rounding out the list of doubles cashers were: Clark and Smith (1,351), Ed Ver Vane and Thristino (1,284); Cassidy and Jeff Stapleton (1,259); and Robert Oden and Brian Oden (1,248).
SMCBA Open Championships to begin next weekend (Feb. 28-March 1)
The 66th annual Open Championship Tournament of the Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association tournament will be held over the next two weekends (Feb. 28-March 1 and March 7-8) at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes, with Saturday squad times at noon and 4 p.m., and only one squad, at 1 p.m., on each of the Sundays.
Entry fee has been set at $20 per bowler per event, plus optional all-events, both scratch and handicap (90 percent of 220), at $5 each, but prospective participants should be aware that the final entry deadline is midnight Wednesday (Feb. 25).
The tournament will be contested in two average categories, as follows: five-player team, Division A (880-over) and Division B (879-under); doubles, A (352-over) and B (351-under); and singles, A (176-over) and B (175-under).
Multiple participation is available in team event only, and no more than two individuals who have entered together may bowl more than once. To view or download an official entry blank, click here.
