Reading the transcript of President Obama’s State of the Union Address felt a little like reading like reading from Alice in Wonderland. President Obama’s speech was a combination of President Obama all but declaring “Mission Accomplished” when he talked about terrorism to a tone of triumphalism when he talked about the economy. Here’s one of the opening paragraphs of President Obama’s speech:
Tonight, after a breakthrough year for America, our economy is growing and creating jobs at the fastest pace since 1999. Our unemployment rate is now lower than it was before the financial crisis. More of our kids are graduating than ever before; more of our people are insured than ever before; we are as free from the grip of foreign oil as we’ve been in almost 30 years.
That’s factually inaccurate. The real unemployment rate is still high at 9.9%. That’s the unemployment rate when the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t factor in the number of people who’ve quit trying to look for work. It’s the number they’d get if the workforce participation rate was the same as it was when President Obama took office. The headline unemployment rate is 5.6%. It’s that low because the workforce participation rate is the lowest it’s been since the Carter administration. President Carter left office in January, 1981.
Another statistic President Obama didn’t cite is the fact that most of the jobs that’ve gotten created are part-time jobs. If you’re the president, you put lots of lipstick on that pig, then proclaim that America’s economy is robust. If you’re a citizen working 2 part-time jobs and your spouse is working 2 part-time jobs to meet the mortgage payment, pay for higher health insurance premiums and expensive out-of-pocket medical expenses, you grit your teeth and just deal with it.
As for living “free from the grip of foreign oil”, that’s in spite of the Obama administration’s actions, not because of the Obama administration’s actions:
Oil production on federal lands — those under the president’s control — fell 6 percent since 2009, according to the federal Energy Information Administration, while production on private lands increased 61 percent.
The Bakken Formation is almost entirely on private and state lands. The Bakken Boom is well-documented. In fact, there’s a fracking boom happening across the nation.
Then there’s President Obama’s delusion about terrorism:
First, we stand united with people around the world who’ve been targeted by terrorists — from a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris. We will continue to hunt down terrorists and dismantle their networks, and we reserve the right to act unilaterally, as we’ve done relentlessly since I took office to take out terrorists who pose a direct threat to us and our allies.
When President Obama decided not to leave a residual force in Iraq, ISIL terrorists took over. It didn’t take much time for them to expand their control from a couple outposts in the Iraqi desert to controlling one-third of Iraq and most of Syria.
Instead of sending large ground forces overseas, we’re partnering with nations from South Asia to North Africa to deny safe haven to terrorists who threaten America. In Iraq and Syria, American leadership, including our military power , is stopping ISIL’s advance. Instead of getting dragged into another ground war in the Middle East, we are leading a broad coalition, including Arab nations, to degrade and ultimately destroy this terrorist group.
That’s breathtaking in its dishonesty. Our military hasn’t stopped ISIL. It isn’t that it can’t defeat ISIL terrorists. It’s that President Obama is reluctant to use the military to eliminate ISIL terrorists.
Then there’s this nonsense:
Our diplomacy is at work with respect to Iran, where, for the first time in a decade, we’ve halted the progress of its nuclear program and reduced its stockpile of nuclear material. Between now and this spring, we have a chance to negotiate a comprehensive agreement that prevents a nuclear-armed Iran; secures America and our allies — including Israel; while avoiding yet another Middle East conflict.
Iran’s nuclear program hasn’t been halted. It’s still thriving. In fact, the Iranians just reached an agreement with Putin’s Russia protecting their nuclear program.
The United States has had dishonest presidents before. Last night, the nation caught a lengthy glimpse of our first delusional president. It wasn’t a pretty sight.
