Aside from enrolling in the Student Advantage Program, high school and college students should also enroll in the Amtrak Guest Rewards program. By being Student Advantage Program cardholders, students can easily earn one thousand (1,000) bonus points for enrolling with Amtrak Guest Rewards. The points are earned upon completion of their first round-trip. Further, students should also apply for the Amtrak Guest Rewards Mastercard. Why? Students will receive two (2) points for every dollar spent on Amtrak travel, or up to seven hundred and fifty (750) points per trip on Amtrak’s Acela Express.
How do high school and college students use this card to make their Amtrak reservations? It is very simple. The first step is to log on to Amtrak.com. Next, students are to use the “Fare Finder” at the beginning their search. Next, they need to select “Student Advantage” for each passenger as appropriate. Then, students need to enter their Student Advantage membership numbers on the “Passenger Information” page of the booking process. There is another way. In their user profiles, students can select “Student Advantage” in the “Travel Profile” section, and enter their Student Advantage numbers. Student Advantage will be pre-selected as their preferred passenger discount type and their Student Advantage number will appear already filled-in. When entering their Student Advantage numbers, students must omit any spaces and dashes.
Even though Amtrak’s Student Advantage Program provides many discounts and positives of the membership, there are a handful of limitations which students need to be well-aware of. The ten percent (10%) student discount is only available when travel is booked on Amtrak.com. Further, reservations and changes must be made on Amtrak.com a minimum of three days prior to traveling. The Student Advantage Program benefits are non-transferable. The discount is available only to the card-holding student. The cardholder may not obtain discounts for others. The Student Advantage discount does not apply to Business class, First class or sleeping car accommodation. These upgrades are permitted upon payment of the full accommodation charges.
