In his comments on the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya, The Reverend Franklin Graham wrote on his Facebook page dated February 16, 2015: “As we mourn with the families of those 21 martyrs, we’d better take this warning seriously as these acts of terror will only spread throughout Europe and the United States. If this concerns you like it does me share this. The storm is coming.”
This warning of a coming spiritual storm has many aspects to it. The first of these aspects could be that a storm of more persecutions and terrible murder of Christians is coming from fanatical members of eastern religions who consider it their religious duty to kill anyone who is not as fanatical as the members of their religious sect are.
Another aspect of that warning could be found in the prophecies of the Apostle Paul in Second Thessalonians 2:7 (NASB) where he declares “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.” Paul further prophesies in 2 Corinthians 2: 1-11 that a man of lawlessness will arise who will get his spiritual power from the Devil so he can produce signs and false wonders that would deceive those people who would not receive God’s truths and be saved.
Although that man of lawlessness has not yet been openly revealed, the demonic spirits that would empower him have been very busy in deceiving many people into committing great actions of lawlessness ranging from actions creating great chaos to killing Christians who are spreading God’s spiritual messages from the Bible and then trying to destroy any form of the influence of God’s principles of living and leadership that are found in American society, American government, and even in Western Civilization.
In the scariest prophecy of Jesus Christ about the conditions on earth before His return He declares that ”because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
So what are Christians to do when they see some of these things happening in their area? The response to that question also has many aspects to it. The first of these aspects is that they need to use the insight of the Holy Spirit and ask God what He wants them to do about the problems that they see occurring.
The second aspect says that in order to withstand and overcome the coming spiritual, moral, and intellectual storms that are happening in our modern world Christians need to have a strong personal spiritual house that is solidly anchored to the foundation of having Jesus Christ as their personal Savior along with having a good working knowledge of God’s principles of living found in the Bible. Another part of having a strong personal spiritual house is to use the power of the Holy Spirit to be able to live according to God’s principles as they go through their daily activities.
Christians need to use the insight of the Holy Spirit to detect any demonic deceptions or teachings that contradict what the Bible teaches as well as using that insight to detect any attack by the spiritual forces of the Devil. When the latter occurs, then Christians need to use their spiritual weapons described in Ephesians 6: 10-18, the name of Jesus Christ to bind the attacking spiritual forces, and use the power of the Holy Spirit to send them into the abysslake of fire to live there forever.
A third way for Christians to deal with the warning of a coming spiritual storm is to develop an overcoming attitude that says that with God’s power they will fight to overcome the problems that could be caused by the coming storm.
For Christians in some areas having an overcoming attitude means that Christians will use God’s power to strongly hold on to their personal relationship with God through having Jesus Christ as their personal Savior regardless of what terrible physical things their persecutors try to do to them!
As they are being persecuted and killed, faithful Christians can remember the vision of the Apostle Steven as he was being murdered, as found in Acts 7:55-59: “Being full of the Holy Spirit he gazed intently into heaven and saw the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God . . . and they went on stoning Stephen as he called upon the Lord and said, ‘Lord Jesus receive my spirit.’”
Just as Stephen died and was taken to Heaven and put in a special place around God’s throne, so will faithful Christian martyrs also be taken to Heaven and put in a special place around God’s throne where Jesus will be their Shepherd and will guide them to the springs of the water of life as promised in Revelation 6: 9-11, 7: 13-17.
Therefore, as Christians consider the above warning and see the spiritual storms coming, let them use God’s insight to tell them what to do about them as they go through their journey of life waiting for the coming of Jesus Christ with the armies of Heaven to conquer all forms of evil and set up God’s earthly kingdom.
