Going from someone I had never heard of before the last season of Big Brother, Ariana Grande seems to be all over the news the past couple of days. Between Ariana and Bette Midler, the gossip column headlines read like a cat fight in the middle of the street.
The original sexy diva, Bette Midler, spoke out about Ariana Grande’s slithering about on a couch in her videos, attempting to sell sexy with her music. Midler told The Telegraph:
It’s terrible! It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch, looking so ridiculous. I mean, it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it. I wish they’d stop. But it’s not my business. I’m not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that’s what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold.
Ariana’s claws came out as she responded:
All love here. Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the “F” they wanted without judgment. Not sure where that Bette went but I want that sexy mermaid back!!! Always a fan no matter what my love. And I will still quote first wives club every single day of my life. LMAO.
The fur seemed to settle back down a bit when the 68-year-old Midler tweeted back:
About my screed on @ArianaGrande, all I can say is, ‘Spoken like a reformed old whore! She does have a beautiful voice, on a couch or off.’
Now that is settled, can we play nicely, ladies?
Ariana handled the spitting match with dignity and grace, even though she was compared to a whore. Midler claimed her fame based on sexy, slinky style characterizations and it surprises me that she would be offended by Grande’s moves or lyrics.
I am a fan of Midler’s because I grew up with her raunchy humor. Her humor and line delivery is what made me a life-long follower. Never hearing of Ariana Grande until her brother Frankie appeared on Big Brother, I can’t say I’m a fan or not. I do, however, know I’m a fan of classy replies to nasty comments and Grande, you’ve gained a fan simply for that reason.
Bette, I’m not going to disagree that the younger generation has brought sleazy to a whole new level in music videos with strange gyrations and risqué movements, but we need to remember that at one time Elvis had moves that turned our parent’s hair white. Let’s just hope they stop showing more tongue than the Rolling Stones icon. That’s a bit much.
This cat fight has been settled and we can move on. The Divine Madness continues in the rest of the world and our headlines should reflect as much. Meanwhile, in Syria…
