Ubisoft Motion Pictures the movie production arm of french game publisher UbiSoft has just announced the official release date of its first movie based on the popular Assassin’s Creed video game. The Assassin’s Creed movie will debut in theaters December 21, 2016, according to THR.com.
Michael Fassbender best known from X-Men: Days of Future Past and 12 Years a Slave will star in the movie and it will be directed by Justin Kurzel. The director and actor are also collaborating for a new adaptation of Macbeth set for release later this year.
Assassin’s Creed was delayed from its original August release as usual because of problems with the original script was not up to par with UbiSofts expectations and then they ran into scheduling conflicts as is usual when a movie production gets delayed and actors have other commitments.
Ubisoft is working with producer and distributor New Regency for the film, but has stressed it retains creative control of the project’s key elements.
The Assassin’s Creed movie is just the beginning of Ubisoft’s movie production business, as they have numerous properties in production with different studios. Ghost Recon is currently at Warner Bros with Transformers director Michael Bay signed on. They also have Splinter Cell movie. Ubisoft, is not just handing over IP’s for the studios to do with them as they wish. So don’t expect this to be a return of Uwe Boll even if Ubisoft has a FarCry movie in development at Sony Pictures..
