CNN reports Saturday that the so-called medical examiner, Shawn Parcells, who operates a for-hire autopsy company out of Kansas City is not a real “Dr.” He doesn’t hold a medical degree of any type. Yet, the Brown family’s attorney hired him to assist in an independent autopsy on Michael Brown with Dr. Michael M. Baden. It was Parcells claim that demonstrated that Brown had been (a) shot in the back and (b) shot with his hands in the air in a position of surrender. However, both claims were later discredited by the official autopsy and witness accounts to the grand jury that heard the case. The damage was done because the lies were not discovered before the claims made by Parcells on a number of news shows fueled protests and unrest across the nation.
Parcells claims to be a forensic pathologist assistant and medical investigator. According to Dr. Erik Mitchell, specialist in forensic pathology, Parcells’ claims are false and misleading. Dr. Mitchell stated, “That is a degree that does not exist in my knowledge, except in the mind of Shawn Parcells.”
Insisting that he’s qualified from experience although admitting to not being certified as a pathology assistant, Parcells cites working for Dr. Thomas Young, former Jackson County Medical Examiner, as a forensic assistant for a year between 2005 and 2006. Parcells then claims to have started training in 1997 as an intern with Dr. Young, and was rehired in the mid-2000’s. The problem is Dr. Young doesn’t remember things quite that way. According to Dr. Young, “Shawn hung out at the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office but was not trained by me.”…. “He has been representing himself in a way that is not appropriate by giving forensic pathology opinions when he is not qualified to do so.”
BizPac Review on Friday reports Parcells has appeared numerous times on national television to discuss the Brown case, and he agreed to an interview with CNN. When asked to respond to a charge by a funeral home director that he did not show up for an autopsy, Parcells went off. “Holy shit! Excuse my language, but I’ve got f*cking emails to prove he and I going back and forth and the fact that he ignores me,” he said. “He’s a dick!”
You get what you pay for when shopping around for the right forensic experts to bolster your case. This is not the first time Parcells’ qualifications have been called into question. The Daily Caller did a report on August 21, more than three months ago, that was critical of Parcells.
Friday BoingBoing posted “Earlier this year, Parcells’ LinkedIn page said he expected to start medical school at the International University of the Health Sciences in the Caribbean starting in September 2014. Later, the date was changed to 2015.” When CNN visited Parcells in his Overland Park, Kansas, home, he presented a photo of himself onstage at what appears to be a graduation ceremony at the New York Chiropractic College. “I got a master’s degree in anatomy and physiology, with clinical correlation,” he said. Asked where his diploma was, he replied that it was on the way. “It’s coming,” he said. “They mail it to you.”
Why would the Brown family attorneys hire someone like Parcells? It seems that Parcells was used to conduct an autopsy, and then Dr.Baden was brought in after to meet with Parcells and give his opinion of it. That way you can get the autopsy you want. In essence, Baden was lending his credibility toward it. Then Benjamin Crump and Darryl Parks took Dr. Baden’s evaluation of the Shawn Parcell review, and handed it off to their New York Times friend, Frances Robles, presenting it as if Baden had actually conducted the physical exam himself.
