A baby body on the beach in Sydney, Australia, has shocked the local community. Police are already investigating what appears to be a horrific crime, as a small group of children were said to stumble across a dead baby buried deep under the sand earlier this holiday weekend. The New York Daily News reports this Sunday, November 30, 2014, that few details are known at this time, but the age of the infant cannot be determined yet due to decomposition.
New South Wales police are still examining the area, but a baby body on beach discovery seems to be a grisly crime early this morning. Local law enforcement authorities say that some young children who were playing on a beach in Sydney came across the dead child; it had been buried under the sand. A crime scene has been erected around the area; the incident occurred near the Maroubra shoreline, an Australian suburb.
“A number of children were playing at the southern end of South Beach when they located the body of a baby in the sand,” a police spokesperson confirmed to media outlets. “Investigations into the child’s death are continuing, however, the age and sex of the child is yet to be determined.”
According to Andrew Holland, one of the detectives on the case, the baby’s body is in the beginning stages of decomposition. Its exact age remains unknown, but the man called it a “very small infant child” which was buried almost a foot underneath the sand. A group of boys, no older than seven years old themselves, were said to have been in the middle of a game on the beach when they came across the horrific find in the dunes. They ran to tell their parents right away, “devastated” at the discovery, said the press release.
“The children were digging — the child was buried under about 30 centimetres of sand,” Holland told reporters. “The two young children reported to their father who was nearby, who in turn contacted police … Unfortunately due to the decomposition, we can’t tell (the age of the baby) at this point.”
It is also unknown in this disturbing “Baby body on beach” discovery how long the dead child was put there or under what pretenses, adds Yahoo News. Police are investigating the recent crime case already, as officers are said to be reaching out to local hospitals for help A thorough examination of birth records is also said to be conducted at this time, as well as communications with the Missing Persons Unit. Authorities say they hope to find the parents of the deceased child as soon as possible.
An autopsy is also in the works at this time in order to learn what the cause of death might be. More details on the baby body found on the Sydney beach are expected to be revealed in the coming days as more evidence is gathered. According to the Mayor of Randwick, Ted Seng of South Maroubra, the gruesome finding was made at a normally desolate shore front, but tourists and local visitors are known to go there on occasion. Seng said he was utterly shocked at the sad news.
“To say that I’m shocked is an understatement,” Seng noted. “I cannot imagine the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”
