If you want to avoid the big-box retailers and purchase something for your favorite yarn-crafter, this is your lucky weekend! Here is a roundup of the deals and happenings at your Chicago-area local yarn shop this weekend.
Elemental Yarns: Open in both Shorewood and Oswego now, Elemental Yarns is offering a Friday Feature to coincide with Black Friday where customers can receive 10% off one Wonderland Yarns mini packs, and 20% off two or more mini packs for the entire day. Wonderland Yarns mini packs are a great gift for anyone on the gift-giving list who likes to knit smaller projects, or who likes to work with many different colors in one project. Both locations are also offering a yarn tasting, where customers can take home a sample of yarn to swatch, on Small Business Saturday, and the stores are open from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. that day.
Esther’s Place: In Big Rock, Esther’s Place is turning Small Business Saturday into a community-wide, free event full of more than just yarn. The retailer will be offering a collection of Natasha Lehrer’s wearable art for viewing, in addition to cookies and hot chocolate for all who come in to browse. The store is open from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. on Saturday.
I’d Rather Be Knitting Yarn Studio: This longstanding Buffalo Grove yarn purveyor is closing at the end of the year. With small-business owner retirement comes great deals for consumers, and I’d Rather Be Knitting is offering 50% off everything in the shop. In addition to regular stock, the shop is offering a one-day-only Black Friday sale of 50% off all shop samples as well. Samples much be purchased with cash or check, and the sale is only in effect on Friday, November 28 from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.
Knit 1 Chicago: Knit 1 is located on Lincoln Avenue just north of Grace Street, and will be offering Small Business Saturday deals to customers all day on November 29, whether or not they use their American Express card. Small Business Saturday, an event sponsored by American Express, is offering Knit 1 the opportunity to give $10 back to the customer if they do use their American Express card. Some of the deals offered in the store are a surprise, so just stop in and know that either way, the customer will be walking away with a great deal on yarn.
Knitche: This retailer, based in Downers Grove, is offering a twist on the holiday-shopping kickoff weekend by partnering with John Fluevog Shoes in the Wicker Park neighborhood for a night of shoe-shopping and knitting. Join the staff of Knitche at John Fluevog from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Sunday, November 30 for a night of mingling and shoe-shopping, and the chance to pick up an exclusive free cowl pattern designed exclusively for the event. Refreshments will be provided at the so-called “Knits ‘n’ Kicks” night, and no RSVP is necessary.
Loopy Yarns: In the spirit of giving, Loopy Yarns, located in the South Loop neighborhood, will be offering a Buy 3 Get 1 Free promotion on all like-item yarns in the store from Black Friday to Sunday. The store is open regular business hours the entire weekend, and there is pay parking for only $4 per hour on Polk street.
Mia Bella: Mia Bella Yarns and Accessories, based in Highland Park, is hosting its annual Black Friday Sale on both Friday and Saturday. All items in the store are 20% off, with Clearance items going to 50% off for the two days of the sale. The store is open from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on both days.
Sister Arts Studio: This Lincoln Park creativity nook is offering a unique promotion on Small Business Saturday; customers will receive 10% off any class offered in December if they register on November 29. Classes include 10% off materials purchased for the class in addition to the fee itself and offerings include a stocking, a wreath, and a needle-felting class. Hours on Saturday are from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.
String Theory Yarn Company: The ever socially-conscious String Theory is participating in more than one feel-good promotion to combat the stress associated with holiday shopping. The store is starting with 100 skeins of Madelinetosh Yarn’s exclusive colorway to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the yarns going to the cause. Also, String Theory opens their annual Scarf Market on Black Friday, with all proceeds of sales from the donated, handmade scarves going to local group Bridge Communities, which fights homelessness in the area. Over the six years of hosting the Scarf Market, String Theory has raised more than $25,000 for community-level local charities. The sale goes through Christmas.
Windy Knitty: For Small Business Saturday, Andersonville-based Windy Knitty is offering a $5 coupon for every $50 spent in the store on Saturday, November 29. The sales receipt serves as a coupon to be redeemed in the month of February 2015, and all the customer must do to receive the discount is bring in their receipt during that time period. Windy Knitty is also a registered business with Small Business Saturday, so customers who register their American Express card are eligible for a $10 rebate after $10 of qualifying purchases from small businesses. Windy Knitty kicks off their holiday hours, being open 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. starting this Saturday.
Wool and Company: Saint Charles-based Wool and Company is all about the stocking stuffers this year, with project bags from Knit Knerd, socks from Blue Q, and an always-plentiful wall of clearance yarns and pattern books in addition to many great gifts at regular price. The store is open from noon to 5:00p.m. on Saturday, and there is a free parking garage directly to the south of the store in downtown Saint Charles.
Yarns to Dye For: Deals at this Frankfort-based local yarn shop are valid for both Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, and they include promotions from their own store and the now-closed Knitting, Etc., which had a crossover customer base from its proximity to the other store. Customers with a punch card from Yarns to Dye For will receive double the card-punches and double the regular discount on Friday and Saturday, and customers with a Knitting, Etc. punch card will receive a 20% discount whether or not the card is full. Customers will also get an increment-based discount, with the largest discount being 30% off any purchase over $200. The store is open from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on Friday, and the store will open at the same time but close at 3:00p.m. on Saturday.
In addition to retailers, Chicago Knits Magazine is kicking off its subscription campaign on Black Friday by offering a year-long subscription for $24.99, through December 31, 2014. All new subscribers will be entered to win a tote bag filled with over $100 worth of yarn inside.
Berroco Yarns is offering a deal through their website throughout the weekend to encourage shoppers to purchase their yarn through local yarn shops. Customers who email a photo of their local yarn shop receipt for Berroco Yarn purchased from Small Business Saturday through December 31 will receive a coupon code for a free pattern for every $25 worth of yarn purchased.
