Bobbi Kristina Brown is out of her medically induced coma but has irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive and is not awake, said her grandmother, Cissy Houston.
Cissy, the mother of Whitney Houston, said while Bobbi Kristina may be able to live a long life with her brain damage, a full recovery is nearly impossible. Cissy also noted that Bobbi remains on life support.
“I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy,” Houston told People. “According to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive. Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me.”
Cissy made the comments to clarify confusing statements made a few days earlier by Bobbi Kristina’s dad, singer Bobby Brown. Brown, 46, raised eyebrows after telling Dallas concertgoers that Bobbi “was awake” and was “watching” him perform. Brown’s remarks fueled unwarranted speculation that Bobbi Kristina’s condition was better than it really is.
Brown’s wife, Alicia Etheredge-Brown, later issued a statement saying Bobby had been in “an emotional state” when he blurted out the news suggesting Bobbi Kristina was on her road to recovery.
“My husband made an attempt to correct the negative comments he must endure on a daily basis from both family and the public regarding his daughter’s medical condition,” said Etheredge-Brown. “He is encouraged by the steps that Bobbi Kristina has made since her hospitalization on January 31, 2015. She has made it out of ICU, opened her eyes, and started a rehabilitation that will be long and hard.”
Bobbi Kristina Remains On Life Support: Prognosis Is Grim
A comatose Bobbi Kristina Brown hovers near death on life support, which includes a ventilator and feeding tube. While experts say her youth may help her wake up one day, they underscored that Bobbi Kristina, 22, has suffered irreparable brain damage and will never be the same.
Bobbi Kristina was found unconscious and face-down by her friend Max Lomas in the bathtub of her Georgia home. Lomas called 911 while Nick administered CPR, Celebrity Health reported. In February, doctors tried to take Bobbi Kristina off the drugs that had kept her in a medically induced coma but quickly aborted the plan after she started having violent seizures.
As Bobbi Kristina fights for her life, her boyfriend, Nick Gordon, is being treated in a drug and alcohol rehab center after admitting he tried to commit suicide twice since her hospitalization. An emotional Gordon said he will kill himself if Bobbi Kristina dies.
Meanwhile, Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother, Cissy Houston, said there’s little hope for a full recovery, but she will “be alright” if Bobbi dies. “She’s the same,” the deeply religious Cissy told WBLS FM 107.5. “You know, still not a great deal of hope. [We’re] still praying.”
Houston added: “I give it to God one time, because I know he’s able. And I cannot change a thing. I’m asking everybody: ‘Just pray to the Lord, who we know can do something about it.’ If he works a miracle, thank God. If it happens the other way, I’m alright.”
Cissy thanked fans for their love and prayers for Bobbi Kristina, saying she and her family sincerely appreciate the emotional support during this difficult time. “I feel every bit of it,” said Houston. “I truly do.”
