The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights broke out of their 0-3 start against tough opponents with hat tricks from Michael Kelley and Nate Barry and Griffin Ehlen had six assists that led them to a 16-2 win over the host St. Louis Park Orioles Thursday night.
Colin Mulcahy, BSM head coach gave his reason prior to the game for the team’s slow start.
“Overall, we’re a pretty young team. We’ve played three top 10 opponents Eden Prairie, Jefferson and Eagan. We’ve got a lot to learn.”
The Orioles got the upper hand in the first quarter as Robert Roethler raced down the field, headed toward the center slot and scored :47 into the game. Roethler would pick up an assist on the second goal when he center the ball to Brody Ilstrup and St. Louis Park would have a two goal lead. The Red Knights would wrap up the first quarter scoring as Ehlen passed from behind the net to Jake Anderson and he put it past Oriole goalie Colin Monicatti to cut the lead to one.
Monicatti returned to the net after being sidelined due to illness.
But in the second quarter, the St. Louis Park defense collapsed like the Teflon coated roof at the late Metrodome. BSM would tie the score on a right side goal from Turner wine, a freshman who was promoted from the junior varsity team. They would go on a four goal burst in a period of 2:28 that started on a goal from Thomas Luedtke on another outstanding overhand pass from Ehlen, followed by Wine’s second goal :51 later. Kelley would spin around, shoot and score his second goal :20 later and Barry, who Red Knights fans likely recognize from his stint as running back on the football team would score his first goal of the season. Ehlen would score his first goal off a pass from Kelley with 1:03 left in the half to give BSM a 7-2 halftime lead.
The scoring barrage continued in the third quarter for the Red Knights, starting with Luedtke’s goal that barely went into the net. Ehlen and Kelley would also tally and Matthew Arnason would score on an outside shot. Oriole head coach Kevin Reed would pull Monicatti from the net and replace him with backup Benji Wyberg.
BSM was not finished delivering balls into the net in the fourth quarter as Ehlen would pick up two more assists, giving him eight points on the night. He assisted on goals from Kelley and Barry. Another JV player would also break into the scoring column for the Red Knights and it was Brian Arnold. William Tucker would scored the 16th and final unanswered goal for BSM :48 later.
The Red Knights improved their record to 1-3 and begin a three game homestand on Tuesday, April 28 against the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles at 7 PM. The Orioles fell to 2-3 and will also return to action on the 28th as they face Minneapolis at Washburn.
In other St. Louis Park athletic news, activities director Andy Ewald stated that Whitney Meierotto has been named the new head volleyball coach. Meierotto, who played on the 2007 and 2008 Division II national championship teams at Concordia-St. Paul headed the Blake Bears in 2014. she replaces Michelle Fuller who left after one season with a record of 6-20.
