Bruce Jenner tried to undergo sex change 30 years ago, but stopped after taking female hormones for five years because he was worried how his transition to a woman would affect his children.
Bruce told ABC News he began hormone therapy, got electrolysis and plastic surgery to make his face look more feminine but stopped after five years of hormone treatments over concerns about his kids.
Bruce’s first wife, Chrystie Crownover, recently confirmed Bruce was a longtime cross-dresser who had wanted sex change surgery for a while.
Bruce, who is transgender, was inspired to go through with a sex change transition after hearing about transgender tennis player Renee Richards. In her 1983 autobiography, “Second Serve,” Richards detailed her gender reassignment surgery and discussed how being transgender affected her life.
Jenner reportedly sought out doctors in Denmark to explore having sex change surgery, but then gave up shortly after he started dating Kris Jenner. Bruce got breast reduction surgery and stopped his hormone treatments after meeting Kris in September 1990. The couple married in April 1991.
Bruce, who was recently photographed wearing a dress, expressed anxiety about his future after his sex change transition to a woman.
“I want to know how this story ends, you know?” Jenner told Sawyer in a video clip (see above). “How does my story end? It’s going to be an emotional roller coaster, but somehow I’m going to get through it.”
Bruce, who recently got a nose job to feminize his face, reportedly also got breast implants. Jenner, 65, is expected to discuss his decision to get sex change surgery and the difficulties of living day-to-day as a woman trapped inside a man’s body.
Bruce Wears Dresses and Bras At Home
Jenner wears women’s dresses, bras and lingerie almost exclusively at home, but still wears men’s clothes when he goes out in public because he’s afraid of public ridicule.
During his Diane Sawyer interview, Jenner said he doesn’t want his sex change transition to hurt his children. “I can’t let myself hurt them,” said Bruce. “Those are the only ones I’m concerned with.”
Jenner is joined in his April 24 interview by his four oldest children: Burt, 36, Casey, 34, Brandon, 33, and Brody, 31. Jenner has two other biological children (with ex-wife Kris Jenner): Kendall and Kyle Jenner.
Bruce is also the stepfather to Kim, Kourtney, Khloe and Rob Kardashian. Numerous media reports claim Jenner’s decision to go public with his sex change transition has caused a huge rift among the Jenner/Kardashian children.
Jenner’s oldest children, Brody, Brandon, Casey and Burt, openly support his sex change, but Bruce has received little support from the Kardashians, especially Kris Jenner.
Kris is reportedly furious that Bruce has decided to go public with his sex change and is worried about the media circus surrounding his gender reassignment.
Jenner told Diane Sawyer he has been preparing to become a woman for decades. “My whole life has been getting ready for this,” said Bruce. “It made me who I am.”
Bruce: ‘2015 Is Gonna Be Quite a Ride’
Bruce’s face looks a lot softer after getting a nose job to look more womanly. The former Olympic gold medalist also appears to have gotten lip injections, and his cheekbones look rounder and more pronounced.
Jenner got breast implants recently, and the plastic surgery will be featured on his upcoming docuseries chronicling his gender reassignment transition, Celebrity Health reported. “Bruce had silicone breast implants put in a few weeks ago,” said a source. “He went with a smaller implant because he didn’t want to look ridiculous.’
Jenner has already gotten several other plastic surgeries as part of his sex change transition. In December 2013, Bruce got a laryngeal shave, a plastic surgery procedure that flattens the Adam’s apple. Jenner also had a nose job and a partial facelift in 1984, and a second corrective facelift in 2009.
During his Diane Sawyer interview, Jenner expressed optimism about his future. When Sawyer asked him, “Are you gonna be okay?” Jenner replied, “Yeah, I hope I’m gonna be okay. I feel like I’m gonna be okay. 2015’s going to be quite a ride, quite a ride.”
