On January 31, 2015, the Brazos Valley Community Band will close out the annual meeting of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society in Caldwell, Texas. Doors open at 2:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 3:00 p.m. in the Caldwell Civic Center. Cost for the concert is $8 in advance or at the door.
The band’s performance caps off a day of music and presentations. Registration for the entire day is $45 in advance ($40 for TCGS members) or $50 at the door.
“We want anyone who’s interested in Texas Czech history to join us,” says Charlene Hurta, TCGS president. “We’ll have speakers, items for sale from the Czech Republic, and recently reprinted copies of the hard-to-find Czech cookbook A Tribute to Czechs.”
TCGS promotes the study of genealogy of Czechs in Texas, preserves items of genealogical interest, publishes a variety of related materials, and provides educational activities. This year’s annual meeting opens at 8:30 a.m. on January 31 when Gabe Matcek starts the day off with guitar music. Judge Ed Janecka will present Czech History in Fayette County, Texas, followed by Bill Buckner on Fundamentals for Beginning Genealogy Research.
If you preregister, you’ll be assured of a delicious barbecue lunch after Buckner’s talk. If you register at the door, you take your chances on getting a meal. Even though some extra plates will be ordered, TCGS and the caterer need to know a plate count in advance to make sure everyone can be served.
Following the lunch break, Phillip Hadash will present Demonstration on Making Wine and Achieving the Results of Our Ancestors. Then Monica Havelka will explain the society’s new website and discuss how to use it most effectively in her talk, Navigating the New TCGS Website.
The BV Community Band concert will finish off the full day. You are welcome to register for the entire meeting, or attend only the band concert. BV Community Band performs for area events around the region. They are frequent visitors at First Fridays in Downtown Bryan, and have played in multiple venues. The band is made up of volunteers who come to the band through no tryouts or auditions—just the love of music and dedication to perform. The only requirements are to have a love of music, a desire to have fun, and a commitment to practice.
