by zoom dune

The 23 players that earned spots on Canada’s roster for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 tournament were revealed yesterday during an introduction event in Vancouver.

Superstar captain Christine Sinclair and her 153 international goals for Canada is back as the leader of the side that plays out of Group A alongside China PR, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

Several players who were part of the bronze medal team from the 2012 London Olympic Games join her.

The pillars of that squad who are returning are goalkeeper Erin McLeod, midfielders Diana Matheson, Desiree Scott and Sophie Schmidt and forward Melissa Tancredi.

Also included in the squad is a healthy mix of youth with defender Kadeisha Buchanan, and midfielders Ashley Lawrence and Jessie Fleming all suiting up for a second-straight FIFA competition after being members of Canada’s Women’s U-20 Team last summer at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014.

The six cities hosting the tournament are Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Moncton and Montreal.

Canada’s National Women’s Team kicks of the first stage by playing in the opening game against China PR on June 6 in Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.

Next on the pitch for the Canucks will be coach John Herdman’s former side, New Zealand, on June 11 in Edmonton.

The Canadians close out the first stage on June 15 against the Netherlands at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium.

The first stage matches in Canada’s capital start June 7 when Norway play Thailand and Germany takes on Ivory Coast at Lansdowne Stadium (TD Place).

The second showdowns of the first stage go June 11 when Germany tackles Norway and Ivory Coast faces Thailand.

The first stage in Ottawa concludes June 17 when Mexico clashes with France and Korea Republic takes on Spain.
