There’s no feeling like the ‘hot, island, tropical air’ feeling – especially when it’s fifteen degrees below zero and it’s feeling like the ice age along with that wind chill. Toronto, Canada (also known as the ‘great north); has ironically become the hometown for Caribbean-themed events which bring tourists into this vibrant city during the cold, wintery months of December, January, February and early March!
After having been entertained at various social dances over the holiday season, topped off by new year’s celebrations; the fun has just begun! Somehow this phenomenal scene never seems to end.
Snowbirds are classified as those individuals who willingly leave town for the winter; who prefer to remain on the warmer side of the world. Moreover, there are ‘Carnival Chasers’ who tend to leave town whenever there is an upcoming festival or a costume parade including band stand tourist attractions such as those annual musical events; which normally take place in a Caribbean country.
The extreme longing or sadness brought on by missing that ‘feeling’ is known as ‘Tabanca’ – a term that’s commonly used in the colloquial dialect vocabulary by ex-patriots hailing from Trinidad and Tobago; all of whom are residing in their ‘second home’ being ‘Toronto’.
The Carnival season is approaching; and it ends just before Ash Wednesday, in Trinidad. Hence the reason why promoters and well-known DJ’s from ViBES Entertainment are presenting their Annual ‘CARNiVAL TABANCA’ fete / party: on Saturday January 17th, 2015 at:
The JUNCTION Bar Lounge
3820 VICTORIA PARK AVENUE
(just SOUTH OF STEELES AVE.) in East Toronto.

Hand-drumming on (djembes / congas) can become an optional recreational activity for parents and their children through DrumTimeCanada.com.
Ongoing efforts in support of the Canadian Cancer Society through DrumForCancer.com; continue to be shared online. Contributions can be made to gofundme.com/drum-child and gofundme.com/steelpan-child.
Musical recreation provides a different avenue through which under-privileged youth can express themselves; and stay safe instead of wandering on the streets after school. These programs create a ‘new pathway’ for many youth to be able to deal with any of the socio-economic obstacles that arise in various communities across the city of Toronto.
Playing an instrument also leads to opportunities to join a stage band, teach the art form or play as a soloist performer; henceforth creating self-employment and an extra income for oneself in the entertainment industry!
