ARRRRRRGHHHH! It was “Hunger Games Night” at the Canton Memorial Civic Center and the fans went home hungry once more for a home court victory. At one point in the first half the Canton Charge was ahead by 24 points only to lose in overtime 102-98. Unbelievable! It looked like Canton was going to cruise through this game against the Grand Rapids Drive as they overpowered the new D-League franchise 30-18 in the first quarter. This was due mainly to Cleveland Cavaliers assignment Alex Kirk netting for ten points and seven rebounds. Chris Crawford also made his presence known on the stat sheets hitting for nine points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ultimately the Charge held the Drive to 13-36 (36%) while outscoring them 30-18.
The only life that Grand Rapids showed was a seventy foot shot at the buzzer that went in for three as the half ended. As the second half began one would have the impression that the west end of the court must have had all its mojo removed as the Canton Charge experienced the same disaster on that end of the court as the Drive had in the first half. In the third quarter the Drive outscored the Charge 29-15 (57%) while limiting Canton to just 23% shooting. Drama set in as the Charge entered the fourth quarter with a tenuous two point lead of 72-70.
The crowd breathed a little easier as William Buford hit seven points on 3-of-5 shooting with a three pointer added for good measure with 4:04 left and the Charge up nine points at 89-80. The pesky Drive came back with an 11-2 run (Lorenzo Brown hit for six) sending the game into 91-91 lock at the end of regulation.
At the tip-off Canton put a little too much touch and the ball ended in the upper deck. After inbounding the ball Grand Rapids L.D. Williams went over Michael Dunigan for two while drawing a foul. That was pretty much the ball game as the Drive outscored the Charge 11-7 that included 7-of-9 free throws leading for the remainder of overtime for the franchise’s first ever victory. ARRRRRGHHHH!
Kirk finished with his second double-double in as many nights with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting, 12 rebounds, and two blocks in 41 minutes on assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Crawford filled up the box score with 16 points with six rebounds, seven assists, and four steals in 39 minutes. Justin Johnson came off the bench to add 17 points and four rebounds in 33 minutes, while Stephen Holt supplied 11 points and three steals in 33 minutes.
Adonis Thomas poured in a game-high 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting in 44 minutes. Newly acquired Willie Reed made his debut this season with 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting, 15 boards, and four blocks in 36 minutes of relief. Williams finished with 11 points and three boards in 32 minutes.
