It was a fast moving physical game and a good win as the Canton Charge, presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers simply overpowered the Maine Red Claws throughout the contest for a 99-88 victory during an early start Sunday Evening contest. The win puts Canton 3-3 and 2-2 at home.
As early as 4:06 in the first quarter the Charge took the lead and never looked back leading by as much as 12 in the first half claiming 29 rebounds plus 20 trips to the free throw line. Leading the scoring for the Charge was Cavaliers assignment Alex Kirk whose 6-9 was good for 12 points as Canton led 51-39 at the half.
As the game moved into the third and fourth quarter Canton would allow Maine to cut the lead down to a single possession only to slam the door in their face and run up the score to double digits again. Over all Canton finished out-rebounding the Red Claws 50-36 while hitting 50% of their attempts or 36-of-72 (50%).
Throughout the contest there were fast breaks, high speed passes, and exciting shots from all angles of the basket making for a spirited contest that was enjoyed by the fans. Three extra jump balls had to be called for due to the excessive grappling for the ball under the net. This was the pure science of basketball.
Arinze Onuaku posted his second double in as many games with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, 16 rebounds, and four assists in 37 minutes. Kirk finished with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting and six boards in 30 minutes. Justin Johnson came off the bench to provide clutch, run-stopping buckets en route to a team-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Stephen Holt added 17 points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes for Canton.
Jermaine Taylor paced Maine with his game-high 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting, seven rebounds, and four assists in 34 minutes. Tim Frazier supplied the Red Claws with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals in 38 minutes. Omari Johnson netted 14 points with six boards in 20 minutes off the bench, while Christian Watford added 18 points in 30 minutes for the visitors.
