Saturday morning started out with a walk for one dog at a high-kill upstate shelter, and ended with the lucky dog finding her forever home.
Allison Aiken is part of an important team at Greenville County Animal Care, the high-kill shelter in Greenville, South Carolina. Since the summer of 2014, Allison has volunteerd her time as a dog walker for the shelter. Without volunteers like her, the dogs would be stuck in a kennel, never knowing the love of another human, or the joy of walking in the sunshine.
On February 28, Allison picked up Miss Darla, a sweet pit bull, for a ride then a walk in beautiful downtown Greenville. This walk was meant to get Miss Darla some exposure, in hopes someone would stop and fall in love with her and want to take her home. She turned some heads, and got a few head rubs, but no one was interested in adoption.
When describing her day, she said
“She turned heads and got some affectionate attention, but no one stopped me to ask how to adopt her. Finally the walk was over and she and I were headed back to GCAC and my heart was breaking because as quickly as I met her I fell in love and knew I couldn’t bring her home with me, no matter how much I wanted to.”
Allison soon returned to the shelter with Miss Darla, heartbroken to leave her, yet at the same time knowing she couldn’t take Miss Darla home herself. You see, Allison adopted two pit bulls herself from the shelter in 2014, making her family complete. For those who don’t know her personally, she’s a big pit bull advocate.
At the last minute, Allison decided to give Miss Darla one more potty break before leading her back to her kennel. And that’s when it happened. What every dog advocate dreams of. On that final walk outside, Miss Darla met her forever family and was adopted! Tonight, she’s in a home where she’ll be loved and cherished.
Allison is beyond thrilled, and posted on her Facebook wall
“It was in the stars, meant to be, kismet, it was a miracle that the wonderful and loving family was in the courtyard the moment Darla and I were!!! I can’t thank all my shelter buddies enough for all the positives they bring into my life!!! I can rest easy tonight knowing that Sweet Darla will be sleeping in a lovely warm, safe forever home tonight, all because everyone was in the right place at the right time!!!!! I’m one happy girl today!!!!”
Congratulations, Miss Darla. May your years be filled with belly rubs and long walks. You deserve it sweetheart. And Allison-you’re the BEST!
