On a recent episode of “Catch a Contractor,” comedian Adam Carolla and his friends, licensed home-improvement contractor Skip Bedell and his private investigator wife, Alison are going after the worst contractors in America on this episode titled “Take the Money and Done.” Before Adam became famous for his comedy and other endeavors, he was a contractor, so it is not much of a stretch for him. Now, the team is on the job to hunt down the scumbags who screw over innocent people, and force them to complete the jobs they left unfinished. If they cannot find these people, they will finish the job and help the family take legal action against these swindlers.
Adam and Skip went to meet with the Woodard family. Mike and Kirsten hired a contractor to redo their kitchen. Kirsten’s brother passed away, and they adopted his four children. Now they need a larger kitchen to accommodate the more mouths to feed. A buddy from high school agreed to help them. With no lights or electricity, they are in dire straits. The contractor’s bid was $13,995 for cabinets/countertops, floors and appliances. They paid him $12,599. The guys know the bid was impossible for anyone to do a kitchen for this price unless it was a dollhouse.
When Skip and Adam came in, they immediately spotted black mold, and two of the children have asthma. The contractor, Gilbert told them that he has done over 300 kitchens, but by the looks of it, he never did one. Alison came to see the cute looking house, but the inside was a catastrophe.
There was even a bigger catastrophe when Alison checked up on him. He was using a license from another business who never heard of him. The legitimate business was anxious to find him too and file a complaint against him. Alison promised to contact them when she caught up with him.
Adam and Skip sent in the mold team, wearing hazmat suits to investigate the source of the mold and eliminate it before any further work could be done. Alison found Gilbert and set up an appointment to meet him at the sting house. Alison showed the guys pictures of Gilbert; a big guy with a criminal record including fraud convictions. Gilbert was at a loss for words when confronted, but soon was frustrated because he was caught in lie after lie. They gave him the three options; give the money back (ha ha), return to the scene of the crime and make the repairs under Skip & Adam’s supervision, or they will help the family take him to court.
Gilbert agreed to return and make the repairs. When he arrived he told the guys he had done seventeen kitchens, but told the family he did over three hundred. The story changes so often, it is difficult to keep up, but Skip and Adam worked on him until he had no choice but to admit he was lying. Once he admitted to his lie, they had more respect for him; but not much. As the couple listened to lie after lie, they finally could no longer stay in the other room and came out to rip him a new one. They were livid from the deceit he was perpetrating, but they lived in this for five months and it was not funny.
Finally the family returned to see their new kitchen. It was the most beautiful job ever. The mold was gone and the family can be a family once again. Gilbert came in one more time to face the family, he admitted to his lies; and asked them to please accept his tearful apology. He felt that it was a blessing in disguise, because he can stop lying to himself and others. He plans to stay on the straight path in the future.
Thanks to Adam, Skip and Alison there is one more happy family because of their hard work on “Catch a Contractor.”
