Comment below for a chance to win two tickets to the Miami Contemporary Dance Company’s limited-run performance of Light. This new repertoire will have only two showings – Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7.
Light is a collection of three choreographies: Shadow Light, Not in My Name and Lux x 3. The MCDC’s performance will serve as the World Premiere of Lux x 3, a highly-anticipated piece by Art Director Ray Sullivan. The choreography focuses on light and uses the dancers’ movements to highlight light’s abstract qualities. It represents the culmination of Sullivan’s work in his prior choreographies, Shadow Light and Not in My Name.
“I am excited to debut my latest work, Luz x 3, alongside other dances I’ve choreographed to Kevin Keller’s exceptional music,” stated Sullivan. “It is an honor to bring our audiences a performance that celebrates the deep artistic bond between choreographer and composer.”
Each of the three pieces is choreographed by Sullivan, with music arrangements by New York composer, Kevin Keller. Costumes and sets are designed by the internationally-acclaimed designer, Jorge Gallardo, and light design is by Carla Iparraguirre.
Shadow Light is Sullivan’s interpretation of the relationship between shadow and light, and how these opposing forces interact with the glow created by human energy. The piece is the first Sullivan set to the music of composer Keller, and ultimately led to the pair collaborating on a variety of other pieces, including Not in My Name.
Sullivan’s choreography of Not in My Name, inspired by Italian art work, depicts the resilience of the human spirit in the face of holy war. The piece had its Miami premier in November 2014 at Overtown’s Historic Lyric theater.
