On Friday November 21, 2014 rock legends Cheap Trick blew the roof off the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa at Lake Tahoe. The MontBleu Theater was completely sold out for this show with hard core Cheap Trick fans of all ages.
Cheap Trick is an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1973. As of 2010, the band currently consists of Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar) and Daxx Nielsen (drums), who replaced founding member Bun E. Carlos on drums. Their biggest hits include “Surrender”, “I Want You to Want Me”, “Dream Police” and “The Flame”.
They have often been referred to in the Japanese press as the “American Beatles”. In October 2007, the Illinois Senate passed a resolution designating April 1 as Cheap Trick Day in the state. The band was also ranked No. 25 in VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
The set lasted a solid 90 minutes and went like this, (from the set list on stage)
“Hello There”, “Elo Kiddies”, “Big Eyes”, “Hot Love”, “Lookout”, “On Top Of The World”, “Heaven Tonight”, “Borderline”, “She’s Tight”, “Don’t Be Cruel” (Elvis Presley cover), “Need Your Love”, “I’m Waiting for the Man” (The Velvet Underground cover), “Baby Loves To Rock”, “I Want You To Want Me”, “Dream Police”, “Ain’t That A Shame” (Fats Domino cover), “Never Had A Lot To Lose”, “Surrender” and “Goodnight”.
Over 40 years of rockin’ their fans, these guys still know how to put on a great show. Rock & Roll at it’s best. This examiner saw the band in the late ’70’s and can tell you they have not lost a beat. They may look a bit older now, but can still blow the venue apart and rock the crowd.
The high light of the show for me, not counting all the great songs that they played, was when legendary rock guitarist Rick Nielsen brought out his five neck 36 string monster guitar on the last song of the night. Although Nielsen also played many of his other double neck and custom made guitars, the five neck was my favorite. You really need to see it to believe it.
Lead vocalist Robin Zander still has all the girls screaming, his vocals were still very good and stage presence killed.
All said and done, Cheap Trick is very much still worth the ticket price. If you have the chance, this is a must see show.
A great time was had by all.
As usual, the Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa keeps rockin’ Lake Tahoe with all the best shows and concerts. The entire staff there is top notch, especially the PR dept. my hats off to those guys (and gal). One word can only be said about the seating, sound and lighting at the venue …. Awesome.
