Bending Branch Winery is a boutique winery near Comfort, TX with twenty acres of vines that make up a sustainable practices and organically focused operation. The wines produced include Petite Sirah, Picpoul Blanc, Cabernet, Souzao, Vermentino and Tannat.
Aside from producing and selling wines they also have wine tastings and tours and every so often there are wine pairing events. In the past there have been wine and cheese pairing events but this month for the first time ever there were chocolate and wine pairings in honor of the romance month. Their downtown location, Branch on High, was the site for these pairings on February 6, 7 and 8 and February 13, 14 and 15.
Guests had a chance to sample 6 Bending Branch reserves and library wines each paired with Sweet Comfort Chocolates by Nancy. The group for one of the Valentine’s Day tastings gathered at the table where each place setting included a plate with six chocolates and a detailed menu of the wines and chocolates that would make up the tastings. There were also platters of fruit, crackers and cheese along with pitchers of water to cleanse the palate in between tastings. Host Darrell Coleman greeted everyone and proceeded to explain the day’s event as well as the process of wine making. He was pleasant, friendly and informative and made everyone feel welcome. Before each individual tasting he gave a background on the wine and why they paired it with the selected chocolate.
The tasting consisted of:
- 2013 Comfortage – Paired with white chocolate with apricots
- Chloe Cuvée – Paired with chocolate with cherry
- 2011 Tannat – Paired with chocolate with raspberry
- 2012 CM Estate Tannat – Paired with chocolate with blackberry
- 2011 Petite Sirah – Paired with chocolate with chipotle
- Tannat Port – Paired with dark chocolate
Overall it was an enjoyable event and well worth the time because everything was so delicious. Most of the people present knew each other and are regulars at these tastings so there was plenty of camaraderie. There are always events and tastings going on so it’s best to check online for more information on these events.
