Games continue to evolve toward a more competitive state and gamers have been embracing that change with open arms. As eSports continue to see a major rise in popularity, more and more games are coming in to support to rising sport. 2K Games and Turtle Rock Studios are behind one of the newest, upcoming games that could help push eSports forward, Evolve.
With so many different intriguing modes and possibilities, there’s a lot to love when it comes to Evolve. When you look at what makes Evolve unique, you can’t ignore the unpredictable nature of its gameplay, especially in the mode Evacuation. Five different days or rounds exist in this mode and it makes for some pretty memorable moments.
zoomdune.com had the privilege to speak with Turtle Rock Studios Co-Founder Chris Ashton about memories and moments that stick out to him. Evacuation is inherently unpredictable and so we wanted to hear about a moment when one side was clearly going to win and then all of a sudden the tables turned.
“One of my strongest personal memories happened when I was playing Evacuation early in development. We lost to the monster on the previous round, and he got the AI monster companion as a reward. In the next round though, we were doing so well that we forgot about the AI monster.
“We had trapped the Stage 1 player monster and was putting a beating on him. We had it all but won and suddenly I was flanked and attacked from the side. ‘Two Goliaths?!?!?!’ I was so confused. ‘What’s going on?!?!?!’ I asked my team. Our sure win had suddenly turned to chaos. By the time we remembered why there were two monsters in the game, it was too late. We were beaten. Had we remembered, we might have been more cautious,” Ashton said.
When you become so immersed in an experience like Evolve, it’s easy to forget about a variable that isn’t presently making an impact. Players will need to be totally aware of all outcomes that change the game’s world after each day in Evacuation. The existing possibility of comebacks in Evolve will absolutely be a factor in people coming back to the game more and more.
If you were at E3 2014 or you followed the event, you may recall that 2K Games put on an Evolve tournament. This event had some exciting moments and outcomes for both players and spectators. Ashton discussed a moment that stuck out to him when looking back on the tournament.
“Then at E3 we put on a tournament. The favorite Hunter team got into a scramble with the Stage 1 monster player. They were doing well, but then one guy got caught in a Megamouth. A teammate went to save him and stepped in a plant. Unbelievably, a third teammate stepped in a plant when fighting the monster and the favored team now found themselves with one hunter fighting a monster solo. Needless to say it didn’t go well,” Ashton said.
Evolve is looking like a game that will revolutionize the multiplayer space. Developers continue to push the boundaries of what a multiplayer game can be, and Evolve is at the forefront of that. It has been a long journey for the folks at Turtle Rock Studios and launch is going to be an exciting time. Feb. 10 is nearly here and when it arrives you can experience Evolve for yourself.
