While most people will be biting and scratching for holiday sales, ex-KISS guitarist Ace Frehley will be rocking out with acclaimed bassist Chris Wyse. Wyse, who has worked with notable artists like Mick Jagger and Ozzy Osbourne, recently recorded with Frehley on his latest album “Space Invader” and is now touring across the country. When he’s not playing with legendary rockers, he’s working on new material for his band Owl, who’ve been together since 2007. Wyse shares his wisdom on the new tour and what’s next for his band.
You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in music from Ozzy Osbourne to The Cult. How did you come to work with Ace Frehley? What’s it like working with Ace? What can you tell us about the songs you played on Ace’s new album “Space Invader?”
Chris Wyse: I met Ace while working on his “Behind the Player” DVD shoot. My bandmate in The Cult, drummer John Tempesta, knew the producer of the DVD, and since they didn’t have a bass player for it, John, knowing I am a big KISS and Ace fan, suggested me for it. Ace and I hit it off and had lots of fun playing all day. We both had a feeling we would work together again because we had such a great connection. That led to me recording on Ace’s new album “Space Invader”, and now I am in the touring band, and am very happy to be in this seat. The recording was really cool – it was several days of work and it all flowed easily once again. I recorded the instrumental “Starship” and “What Every Girl Wants.” There are a couple tracks we recorded that may go on Ace’s next record.
Tell us about your band Owl’s upcoming EP.
CW:“Things You Can’t See” is the title of Owl’s forthcoming EP due out in 2015. The music really feels fresh and we broke some new ground on this record. The songs are super catchy and unique with a confident stomp and stamp you won’t forget. We have really come into our own as a band and we own it. This is some of the best vocal and bass work I have ever done. The music is on a mystical tip as well as the lyrics. I feed artistically on my emotions and we will take you for a ride somewhere new. I am very excited and feel 2015 will be the year of Owl!
What’s next for Owl after the EP release?
CW: Owl plans on lots of shows and promotion in 2015. We will support “Things You Can’t See” with a ferocity and explosive live shows.
Thanksgiving is coming up, which means lots of good food. Which dish is your favorite over the holiday?
CW: My favorite is the traditional style turkey, gravy and stuffing. Maybe throw a pumpkin ale in there too. Happy Thanksgiving!
