Christa Engles was shot by her three-year-old toddler as she changed her one-year-old baby’s diaper at home. She died from the gunshot wound an hour later. The gun, which was in the house and supposedly hidden under the couch, was apparently within reach of this toddler who was able to find it and was playing with the weapon when it went off, according to the Standard Media News on Nov. 26.
The grandmother of the children who lived with the family came home to find Christa on the floor and the children covered in blood. She called 911 and the house soon filled up with police, paramedics and crime scene investigators. The police were able to put the bizarre puzzle together with the help of children’s specialists who came to the home to speak with the three-year-old toddler.
The specialists confirmed what the police surmised when walking onto the scene. Christa was changing the baby’s diaper when her three-year-old son found the semiautomatic handgun. The toddler was playing with the gun when it accidentally went off once. That shot hit Christa in the head and when paramedics arrived she was in “grave condition,” reports News Oxy. Christa was transported to the hospital but she died within an hour of this horrific accident.
The little three-year-old boy sat in a Tulsa Police car with an officer as they waited for the specialists to arrive to talk with him. Neighbors overheard the boy saying “Mommy shot” over and over again as he sat in the patrol car. After the child accidentally shot his mother, he tried to leave the home before the grandmother had arrived.
Police did not release Christa’s identity until her husband, who is a truck driver, could return home. He was met by a small crowd of neighbors, police and crime scene vehicles, so he knew immediately something was wrong. Brian Engles, Christa’s devastated husband, took to Facebook to say:
I lost my wife to an accident yesterday. Don’t forget to tell your loved ones they are loved. You really never know when the last I love you really is the last.”
Brian Engles continued with:
“It’s a new day, it will be my first without you. I have so much on my mind but it doesn’t matter. I know you loved me, I worship the ground you walked on. I am the luckiest man alive, to have been able to love you. Since the day i met you you have been the best part of me. I love you Precious Angel.”
Investigators report that there were a lot of guns in the house, according to the New York Daily News. The toddler go a hold of a large semiautomatic handgun, which a neighbor said was stored under the couch in the living room. Apparently it was kept loaded because it is highly doubtful that the toddler was able to load the gun himself.
The family is known to neighbors and friends as wonderful family. Christa was kind and a good wife and mother said the people who knew her best. This is just a “horrible tragic accident” report police. Christa was in the military and she was a trained gun handler, so it is hard to understand why a loaded gun would have been left somewhere that her toddler could find it.
Jade Lyeh Horton, who was Christa best friend since childhood, was very concerned over the little boy who shot his mother. She said he “will have to recover from an unimaginable trauma.” She also said that he “has a lot of people who will fight to keep him from suffering.” Horton also said:
“He has an enormous amount of love. His family is amazing. They’re going to do everything they can.”
