There is a world that exists alongside the human world, just at the edge of sight. It’s a world of magic, wonder, and danger. It’s the world of the fairies, and the Traveler embarks on a journey through this mystical land throughout the four seasons of the year. “Circle the Sun: Summer’s Sol” is the first book in a four-part fairy story by artist/illustrator/author Susan Schroder. Each book in the series takes place during one season. “Summer’s Sol” begins on the summer solstice, when the narrator receives a visit from a mysterious stranger who sets a wondrous adventure into motion.
The narrator’s cat, Merik, runs off after the visitor leaves, and his concerned owner follows to retrieve him. She finds herself in a strange place where she meets the Whistling Tree, a fairy being who straddles fairy land and the human world. The tree sends her on a journey into Faerie, accompanied by Merik and a white raven called Snow. As soon as the three enter fairyland, they meet a grumpy little troll called Pheistus, who has been ordered by the Whistling Tree to help them on their journey. The narrator is soon informed that she is a “Traveler,” a special person who is brought to the land of the fairies because she has a task to complete there. The Traveler later finds out that the human and fairy worlds were once one, but dark forces caused the worlds to split in two, and humans eventually forgot about fairies. The ultimate goal of travelers is to reunite the two worlds. The quest is dangerous, but along the way there are beautiful fairies to meet, and many wonders to behold.
“Circle the Sun: Summer’s Sol” is a beautiful soft-bound coffee-table book featuring Susan Schroder’s beautiful mythic artwork. The artist uses a combination of drawing, painting, photography, and digital artwork to create her beautiful fairy world.
The illustrations are lovely and enchanting. Ms. Schroder’s fairies and her vision of fairy land are stunning. Some of the fairies bring to mind those created by Brian Froud and Alan Lee in their classic book “Faeries.” “Circle the Sun: Summer’s Sol” is a nice addition to any collection of fairy books, or fairy art.
The upcoming books in the “Circle the Sun” series are: “Autumn’s Hearth,” “Winter’s Reign,” and “Spring’s Aerie.”
“Circle the Sun: Summer’s Sol” is self-published by Susan Schroder, and is available on her website. For more information about the “Circle the Sun” book series, and Susan Schroder’s fairy art, like her Facebook page.
