According to their website, ClamCase makes the “#1 iPad keyboard” and displays many positive quotes from notable reviewers. With such praise, this author was interested in their newest model for the iPad Air 2.
Once one’s iPad is snapped into the ClamCase Pro ($169.00; one can currently save $20 by joining their newsletter @ ClamCase.com), the overall appearance is similar to a miniaturized Macbook Air. While other keyboard accessories for the iPad also utilize similar design cues for their products, ClamCase exceeds much of the competition with higher quality materials and improved functionality.
The exterior of the ClamCase Pro (approximately 7.5” by 10”) is a white polycarbonate and the interior features a shell into which the iPad Air 2 locks into place. In this configuration, the buttons (the volume and sleep/wake buttons) are still accessible and there are cutouts for the camera, audio out, lightning connector, and speakers.
The black-colored keyboard has all of the essential alphanumeric buttons for easy typing plus the following shortcuts keys for the home button, search, cut, copy, paste, Siri, iPad’s built-in keyboard, last track, play/pause, next track, mute, volume up/down, lock button, Bluetooth, and battery light status button.
More importantly, the ClamCase Pro’s keys feel more like typing on a laptop with a favorable amount of resistance upon pressing as well as a quick recoil. ClamCase’s usage of actual aluminum to surround the keyboard must be applauded, as it adds strength to the case in addition to providing a suitable palm rest for typing.
This product has a built-in battery that is charged via an included USB cable and takes around 2 hours for a full charge. Yet, this product’s “killer feature” is its extremely impressive battery that this author has not been able to fully discharge in the past few weeks of testing (an LED on this product blinks to indicate the battery’s level of charge).
Aside from a power switch on the side of the unit, the ClamCase Pro excellently goes into sleep mode to preserve the battery and, yet, quickly responds when the case is opened or a key is pressed. Mind-blowingly, ClamCase reports that the battery can achieve 100 hours of usage or 6 months of standby time.
Also, impressive is this item’s hinge that allows for the following three configurations:
• Traditional laptop keyboard (iPad sits above the keyboard)
• Standing position (keyboard is folded underneath the iPad and acts as a base)
• Tablet mode (keyboard is completely out of the way and located behind the iPad)
ClamCase Pro for iPad Air 2 outdoes the competition and definitely deserves all of its hard-earned accolades.
