A few weeks ago, the folks at Clif Bar contacted me to see if I was interested in sampling one of the newest offerings in their Builder’s Bar line. Previous Clif Bar products that I’ve tried have made me somewhat of a fan, so I was excited to try this new flavor, chocolate hazelnut. So I enthusiastically said yes and soon, FedEx dropped off a little love for me in the form of a nicely packed box with my sample bars.
I don’t have any means to measure any nutrition or ingredient claims. That said, I have purchased Builder’s Bars myself won’t hesitate to purchase them again. They’ve earned my trust as a consumer. Builder’s Bars are low glycemic and does not contain partially-hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup. Like the others flavors, this new one offers up 20 grams of protein.
What I can address is the flavor, appearance and digestibility.
Appearance: No surprises here. The chocolate hazelnut Builder’s Bar looks like the rest of the line and, well, like a lot of other protein bars. The bar was coated very consistently, no areas where the coating is thinned out or missing.
Taste: Now we get to the fun stuff. When I told friends about the flavor, they immediately thought this would be a Nutella like bar. This is not the case. The bar contains actual piece of hazelnuts. The flavor was pretty darn good. The hazelnut flavor was not overpowering, but strong enough that it didn’t disappear in in the mix. A subtle taste of hazelnut lingered after the bar was gone. I wouldn’t call it an aftertaste, a term that has a negative connotation to me. The lasting hint of flavor is a plus to me.
Digestibility: I’ve always had good luck with Clif Bar products in this area and these were no exception. They weren’t too chewy or too hard, the most common complaints I have with similar bars. I didn’t have any discomfort or distress during the digestion process. The company suggests you stay well hydrated while using the product and I’d agree with that suggestion.
Allergen warning: The product does contain hazelnuts, almonds and other tree nuts. It also contains soy and may contain milk and wheat.
Verdict: I’m a fan. Hazelnut can be an overpowering flavor, but they got it right here. Just enough to enjoy the taste. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the chocolate hazelnut Builder’s Bar and will definitely be buying more to add into my flavor rotation.
