Richard Starling, or “Coach Rich,” is an innovative basketball trainer who excels in teaching the art of ball-handling. One of the reasons Coach Rich is such a great trainer is because he can demonstrate all of the artistic dribbling drills he teaches his players (see video included).
Coach Rich started his journey at St. Patrick’s High School in Elizabeth, NJ. He trained with Shaheen Holloway by Chris Chavaness (The Patrick School boys’ head varsity coach). His high school coach was Kevin Boyle. In his junior year of high school he transferred to St. Anthony’s in Jersey City where he had the opportunity to play for Bob Hurley. Coach Rich explained, “These people are a big part of what I know about the game today.”
After four years of high school he did a fifth year at Lee Academy in Lee, Maine, where he attracted multiple D2 basketball scholarships. However, his dream was to play D1 basketball so he enrolled in Canisius College where he earned a spot on the team as a walk-on. After a year he transferred to Seton Hall University where he earned a degree in Business with a concentration in Sports Management. Starling realized his dream was to become a basketball skills’ trainer and began to seek out the opportunity to help others.
Coach Rich has helped Blair Academy’s Girls’ Varsity Basketball program win their Fourth-Consecutive MAPL and State Prep A Title during the 2013-2014 Season. He has worked alongside Sandy Pyonin, who runs the New Jersey RoadRunners AAU Program. He has also worked with Rich Leary and Tom Flaherty, who run NJ Demons AAU and US Hoops America.
Coach Rich explained that through his experiences he has learned, “the level of basketball IQ has decreased dramatically within our youth. The lack of discipline plays a major part in that.” As a result, he tries to instill discipline, a high IQ, and advanced skill-work with everyone he trains.
Coach Rich began his own program, which is calls ForeverIBall (“Forever-I-Ball”). He has been training the following players on a consistent basis: Sadie Edwards (Blair Academy graduate, is transferring from UConn to USC), Bre Cavanaugh (soon-to-be graduate of Blair Academy who is on her way to Cal-Berkeley), and Batouly Camara (another soon-to-be graduate of Blair Academy who is on her way to Kentucky). He is currently the JV basketball coach and assistant varsity coach for Wardlaw-Hartirdge School in Edison, NJ.
