And still another familiar object — a coffin — has been espied in a photo from a NASA rover on the surface of Mars. The coffin-shaped object was found in one of the many photos transmitted back to Earth from the Mar Curiosity rover.
UFO Sightings Daily relayed the Mars coffin finding Dec. 28, posting the image of the strange object (strange because something like a coffin shouldn’t actually be there) and noting that the object appears to be constructed of stone. It suggests that
Scott C. Waring, who runs the UFO Sightings Daily site, admits to finding the image himself but gives credit for the first internet posting to WhatsUpInTheSky37, another UFO/space anomaly enthusiast who posted a video of his discovery to YouTube a day earlier. In the posting, WhatsUpInTheSky37 attributes the actual first sighting to his “buddy Kjell.”
The object was found on an older Curiosity rover photo, a “raw image” taken in October 2012. WhatsUpInTheSky37 takes a little time in the video to show where Mars rover photos can be accessed, which is via the “Analyst’s Handbook” on the Washington University in St. Louis education website. He admits that the object in the photo “definitely looks like a mini coffin.” He goes on to say that “it looks to be cut out. What makes it anomalous is how it’s got the kind of decorative piece to it.”
That “decorative piece” appears to be a straight delineation that looks not only parallel to the top of the object but possibly to the bottom as well. As is commonly known, extensive linearity is most uncommon in natural formations, something that lends itself to the idea of an object or artifact being constructed instead of eroded or wind-scoured. And it is just such objects found on Mars, these anomalies, that drive speculation about alien technologies and ancient Martian civilizations.
One commenter, romcomfan, jokes on the YouTube posting that the object is “obviously a loaf of bread that ET dropped”. WhatsUpInTheSky37 replies that he might be right, that the object could be “anything. Even a rock.” The latter, of course, is the NASA standby explanation for just about everything found in the photos of Mars, an explanation often ridiculed by the UFO and alien hunter communities.
Waring, for his part, follows the “mini coffin” line of reasoning. “It looks to be about one meter across and a foot and a half wide and high,” he writes. “Lots of alien species are short, including a species of greys.”
Miniature aliens are a common theme for Waring. In fact, he recently suggested that a small gold disk (about the size of a frisbee) revealed in a Mars photo might actually be a craft of some sort for small aliens.
But Waring also suggests closer observation of the object. “What would it take to get NASA to turn the rover around and examine the contents of this box?” he asks.
What indeed? Closer examination of all the anomalous objects, artifacts, and/or rock formations found in Mars photos would quiet a considerable amount of speculation by UFO enthusiasts and alien hunters. It would go a long way to convincing the researchers that when NASA says they’re looking at a rock through a pareidoliac lens, they might be a bit more accepting of the explanation.
