Here is a list of the college basketball teams with the most losses who did not get selected for the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Looking over the list one thing is clear, the selection committee clearly favored major conference teams over mid-majors.
Virtually every major conference team on or near the bubble, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma State, NC State, Ole Miss, and UCLA got in (except for Miami who probably got left out because they lost to one of the teams below even though the Hurricanes blew out Duke on the road this season).
Texas A&M, who took Kentucky to double OT this season before losing, also did not get in. But just about every other bubble team from the major conferences did get in.
College basketball teams with the most wins not in the 2015 NCAA Tournament
T-1. Murray State Racers – 27 wins
Murray State (27-5) to Belmont in the Ohio Valley Tournament. Murray State won 27 games but didn’t beat anyone good and did not play a tough out-of-conference schedule. Dick Vitale went crazy on ESPN saying they belonged but they don’t.
T-1. Colorado State Rams – 27 wins
Colorado State (27-6) has a lot more to complain about than Murray State because the Rams beat both Boise State and San Diego State this season. Both were conference wins, though, and Colorado State played a very weak non-conference schedule this season but they did win all those games. When Wyoming upset San Diego State in the Mountain West tourney final the Cowboys may have stolen the Rams bid.
3. Iona Gaels – 26 wins
Iona won 26 games (26-8) but lost its conference tournament final to Manhattan. The Gaels played a weak schedule and didn’t beat anybody good all year.
T-4. North Carolina Central Eagles – 25 wins
Lost to Delaware State in conference tournament final. The Eagles (25-7) played a very tough non-conference schedule that included losses to North Carolina, Cincinnati, Maryland and Memphis and they didn’t beat anybody of note.
T-4. Sam Houston State Bearkats – 25 wins
Lost to Stephen F. Austin in conference tourney. The Bearkats (correct spelling) (25-8) played an OK out-of-conference schedule but lost to LSU, Texas A&M and UNLV.
T-4. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs – 25 wins
The Bulldogs (25-8) lost to UAB in their conference tourney final and did not have a win over anybody noteworthy this season.
T-4. UC Davis Aggies – 25 wins
UC Davis (25-6) won 25 games but they lost to Hawaii in their conference tournament and played a very weak non-conference schedule and beat nobody of note.
T-8. Green Bay Phoenix – 24 wins
Green Bay (24-8) lost to Valpo in their conference tournament. The Phoenix did beat Miami this season who did not make the tourney possibly due to that loss because if they took Miami they’d have to take Green Bay too.
T-8. Old Dominion Monarchs – 24 wins
Of all the teams left out with the most wins Old Dominion (24-7) might have the most to complain about because the Monarchs beat both LSU and VCU this season out of conference and both those teams are in.
College basketball teams with 23 wins who did not make the 2015 NCAA Tournament
- Temple Owls (23-10)
Temple has a beef since they did crush Kansas this season and also beat Cincinnati from their own conference. Temple is probably the best team that got left out.
- Stony Brook Seawolves (23-11)
- South Carolina Upstate (23-11)
- Central Michigan (23-8)
- St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (23-11)
- South Dakota State Jackrabbits (23-10)
