Despite body weight exercises are this year’s most popular form of exercise, having a gym membership ultimately prevails in giving you the support, motivation, stress relief, variety and education from pros and avid goers alike. Those who work in New York City and live in New Jersey could really use a gym that has the perks of chain gyms like New York Sports Club. A gym with class variety, amenities and updated equipment at a great price is important. Based on these requirements, I chose to examine Colosseum Gym, located at 525 Irvington Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. According the manager, Art, he mentions that “the clientele that works out here are devoted since opening in 1999 because people are family here.” Armed with a bodybuilding.com workout regime (I will provide more updates of the classes in another article), I was ready to go.
Note: Colosseum Gym no way influenced this review by any means. This article is based on a combination of a workout plan I assigned myself doing and what the gym offers.
o The women locker room has a built in hot room sauna
o Women-only Circuit Training Studio
o You have a live DJ that will ensure you are getting the most out of your workouts, especially if you did not come with music to workout with.
o Colosseum Gym’s membership prices are very affordable, compared to chain gyms and no start-up fees! (
o The gym’s second level includes a 5,000 square foot Extreme Fitness Center called Box 525, catered to bootcamp, boxing, cross fit and Muay Thai with Combat Training. Bonus points for the Youth Program classes.
o The Juice Bar was recently released to acccompy the gym’s shop.
o The selection of the items from the store, although small, does in fact have a good variety of merchandise to purchase in order to aid in weight loss and strength training goals, ranging from protein powders of different brands, fat burners, weight lifting belts and much more.
o Free Towel Service
o Tired of the treadmill? The gym has a variety of cardio equipment such as Jacob’s ladder.
o The personal trainers are ready to help you if you have any questions performing a certain rep or exercise properly.
o The majority of the clientele are generally positive people with a good sense of work-life balance to make their workout count. This is a perk because they are easily accommodating to work with you when doing supersets or having a spotter.
o Does take at least 2 hours to load up the sauna at the locker room.
o For those without lockers, a location to store items would be greatly appreciated.
o The gym need better labeling of both the gym equipment and where and when the classes are held.
o Although it’s wonderful to build a Women-only Circuit Training Studio because men do have a certain protocol of gym routines, would be nice to add a squat machines because it’s the most desirable among women users.
o Would be nice to have female personal trainers to ask questions about fitness goals pertaining to women.
While I haven’t got the chance to fully immerse with Box 525 or the studio, I can say that if you need a gym in New Jersey that combines a diverse clientele, alternatives to weight lifting with classes and the perks of a high studio gym, Colosseum Gym is the best choice. I gave Colosseum Gym four stars for the gym’s convenient location to other shopping centers in Newark, expertise of the trainers, diversity of both classes and the amenities and equipment.
With trainers with years of experience, older clientele that been in the game before I was born to having a protein shake and towel after my trainings, I actually lost weight and got more toned. The clientele are the most interesting people you will meet because the combination of knowledge and dedication for a fit life is not only inspirational, but motivating. A great environment can help you achieve anything.
