Two parents murdered by their own son in a San Diego home are trending atop crime news headlines this evening. A 22-year-old male, identified as Peter Haynes, allegedly fired a gun and killed both his mom and dad in a violent shooting early this morning. SD News reports this Friday, November 28, 2014, that police say the “killer son” is now in custody and being questioned as a prime suspect in the heinous act this holiday weekend.
Neighbors in the Point Loma area say they heard several gunshots being fired Thanksgiving night. By morning, it was discovered that two parents, Lissa and Dr. David Haynes, were dead. They were purportedly killed by their own son in a shocking shooting. The police report noted that the firing from the gun was heard shortly after 3 a.m., and a total of seven shots were fired. The murders occurred in the family’s San Diego suburban home.
For several hours, an intense manhunt ensued for the shooter. By 8 a.m., police an expert SWAT team had managed to find the 22-year-old son of the two parents, who is currently believed to be the killer in the violent murders. He was found skirting around a nearby home in the Point Loma subdivision. The Haynes were confirmed to be dead by medical center officials that same morning. A 911 call was made at one point prior to their deaths, but it was not clarified by whom.
This devastating piece of crime news was relayed UTS San Diego News, which later confirmed that the shooter was 22-year-old Peter Haynes. The young man was seen on Facebook showing his sister, identified as Kimberly Haynes, how to handle a gun in early November. It is not known whether the same gun evidenced in the photo this month is the same murder weapon the son used to kill his parents.
As of Friday afternoon, Haynes is said to still be in police custody. The motive for the shocking murders has not been made clear yet, though officials were interviewing the 22-year-old man earlier this afternoon at Point Loma law enforcement headquarters. The killing of two parents has shocked the force, added the press release. The two victims, both parents of the shooter in their 60s, were said to have succumbed to several gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach. The man and woman were officially declared dead at a local hospital. Relatives have since been notified of the horrific crime before public received word of the news.
Peter Haynes was seen fleeing the San Diego suburban home in a dark hood and sweatshirt. SWAT and patrol authorities managed to locate him wearing the same outfit later that morning. He was said to be attempting to duck under extended police tape at a nearby home; officers confirmed the man was carrying a gun in his pocket and matched the neighbors’ previous description of the son and alleged suspect. He was brought into custody at gunpoint. An investigation is still ongoing into this horrific murder case.
“We were concerned the suspect was wandering around this neighborhood and he was still armed and actually he was,” one police spokesperson concluded. “We’re just lucky that he didn’t confront any other citizens or some of our officers. It could have made this an even worse tragedy than it already is.”
