Legend tells of a great swordsman who fought to protect a princess a thousand years ago. When people came attempting to marry her, he would challenge them to a fight and in all his years, he was never defeated. Some say that he has continued to fight even to the present day.
Kanda is sent to investigate as it is possible that the matter is innocence related. While we see him challenge the swordsman, we learn that several days pass without any sign of him. Even Akuma who were scoping out the area failed to return. As such, Komui sends Allen and Lenalee to get an idea as to what’s going on and to find Kanda.
Where the last plot line fell flat for me, this one actually did a pretty good job of getting me hooked into what’s going on. It’s a simple story, but there’s enough back story to give it some weight and the episode does a good job painting up the threat that this guy could pose.
That being said, the episode does have some weaknesses. The dialogue got rather clunky at times. Characters would repeat information that both the characters and the viewers already knew, which made it feel unnatural and for some reason the rich man who is rallying a mob to find his daughter constantly refers to her fiance as “son in law”.
I also wasn’t sure about Lenalee’s resentment towards Allen early on. I kind of get where she’s coming from and maybe the gap between episodes hurt, but it didn’t feel natural. On the plus side, her sentiment towards their friendship is kind of touching.
I’m not sure how Allen and Lenalee can’t figure out what Vittorio’s (the titular swordsman) deal is. It’s pretty obvious. He dedicated his life to protecting a princess, she died, so he found a suitable replacement in an heiress. Maybe some new twist will be thrown in, but that plot point seems pretty cut and dry.
Sadly, we don’t see the fight between Kanda and Vittorio, but from the glimpse we get, it was a big deal. It goes on for several days and it gets to the point where both parties stop using innocence and just start straight up dueling. Sadly, this puts Allen and Lenalee at a disadvantage as they rely on innocence to fight.
The episode ends with the reveal that Vittorio has a healing factor after Kanda finally manages to land a killing blow. It seems like the gesture is reciprocated as Vittorio swings his Final Fantasy style sword into Kanda’s side.
There were some flaws, but I think that this was a stronger outing than the last arc. It was good to see Lenalee back in action. We’re also given an interesting antagonist as well as some rather despicable townspeople. Even the woman’s father and fiance were pretty scummy. I’m not sure if anything will come of it in the episode’s resolution, but it added some emotional weight to the proceedings as well.
