After seeing Lenalee getting chummy with Russell, one of her coworkers, Komui suspects the worst and starts to get paranoid. It isn’t helped when he hears that the two are meeting up in town. His annoying and disturbing obsession with his sister kicks into high gear and it is up to Allen, Lavi, and the science team to keep him in check.
As was the case with the “Black Order Annihilation Incident”, this episode tries to take a more lighthearted and comedic approach. Where the last episode succeeded thanks to the likability of the science team, this one fails miserably. None of it is funny and Komui continues to be utterly loathsome and annoying.
This really is one of the most awkward, unfunny, and downright unpleasant things I’ve ever had to watch. I’d mark it as the worst episode to date and have a hard time believing that it could get much worse than this. It’s just dumb. Not dumb in a fun way, but just unnecessarily stupid.
Even the akuma that was dispatched to kill Lenalee takes on more of a Wile E. Coyote role as his efforts are constantly thwarted in such a way that he ends up on the receiving end of various punishments. I get what they were trying to do, it just didn’t work. I kept flashing back to earlier in the series when a level 2 akuma was enough to send 2 exorcists fleeing, now it’s getting effortlessly smacked around and urinated on.
There’s so much in this episode that makes no sense. I don’t get how Lenalee and Russell are so oblivious. Buildings explode repeatedly and they just shrug it off. You’d think that, at the very least, they would try to help people who may have been caught in the violence. Instead, they just go on about the day as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
Why didn’t Allen’s eye pick up on the akuma? Even with the transformation ability, you’d think that he would be able to detect that. You could argue that he was distracted, but it still seems like it was only ignored because the plot demanded that it was.
The Komlin III was pretty awesome. That was probably the only thing in the show that was played straight and it’s reveal was actually pretty effective.
Komui barely works as a character in small doses, but it’s clear that he’s not cut out for the spotlight. There’s no charm or empathy. He’s just loud and whiny. His antics aren’t funny. On the contrary, he seems to be a bigger threat than the Earl. He levels entire city blocks for no reason and then just shrugs it off. The guy is a menace and the comeuppance he receives seems far too light considering all the trouble he’s caused.
I know the phrase has been turned into a punchline, but this really was the worst episode ever. It’s true that we’re still pretty early in the show, but this was such a nadir for the series, that I think that it will hold the spot even after another 90 or so episodes. It was just awful.
