“Why would you want to pretend to be someone else?”
It is an obvious question, but sometimes in the world that we live in today the answer is not an easy one.
In the movie DELUSIONS OF GUINEVERE you will find yourself asking not just how far would you go to feel relevent but what are you willing to give up in the process.
It stars Ariana Bernstein as Guinevere James, a young woman who is trying to get rid of the early fame she had in her life and rekindle something that matters for her. She is surrounded by friends that love her and try to be supportive but are going through their own problems, like Heather (played by Sandra Elizabeth Rodriguez). She’s in a strained marriage, has a high-profile and demanding job and trying to balance raising a daughter. There is also Guy (played by Andrew Ruth) who is dealing with his own life issues and rekindles a friendship with Guin along the way.
Tired of being compared to those she knew during her child star days, Guinevere is determined to become something more. Reconnecting with her former agent Frank proves to be a mixed bag. He asked her the very question I began this review with: “Why would you want to pretend to be someone else?” It is the only life that Guinevere has wanted and now she is determined to have it, and after a tragedy strikes a childhood friend she sees the window of opportunity closing on her chance to “make it”. What happens next sends her on a wild emotional ride that will not just test her loyalty to her friends but to herself.
This movie is one that individuals of all walks of life will appreciate. The writing is amazing, the acting rocks and though there are some funny moments I have to say it is a real thoughtful commentary on the world we live in today.
The character that surprised me the most—and had some of the best lines of the film—-was Frank.(played by Tom Grail). The one thing he tries to impress on Guin is that when it comes to building a career “These things take time.” and “success doesn’t come overnight.”. When it comes to discussing Youtube and the whole social media phenomena he says “It used to be it was a privilege to be on camera”, reminding us that today some people are just famous for being famous.
Adding to the commentary of how much of our lives are connected with social media, Guy quips that when his fiance broke up with him and changed his status on Facebook he started getting messages, even asking for hook-ups. “I don’t want to hook-up,” he says to Guin. “I want to break up in private.”
In one of the most powerful scenes of the movie Guin is getting an intervention from her friends that are worried she is taking the whole fame thing too far. Guin then says to them: “I don’t care about being famous…I don’t want to be forgotten.”
Definitely a film that will have you talking about it long after it ends, DELUSIONS OF GUINEVERE reminds us of the importance of living in the moment, enjoying what we have and not losing sight of what matters.
