As the saying goes, the truth will set you free. But, as another saying suggests, sometimes the truth hurts, too. Which was the case Monday night when Chicago Bulls’ point guard, Derrick Rose, let his feeling be known about his struggling team, and what needs to be done to turn things around.
Last night the Bulls lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 108-94.This loss marks the team’s sixth loss out of the last eight games. Although they stand at 27-16, this is one of Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau’s worst streaks. Thibodeau’s team is known to play hard defense, but Rose points out that the team just isn’t competing, even on that side of the court.
Rose shared his frustration after the game, and pointed to lack of communication and effort as the culprits. On Tuesday, Jan. 20, ESPN reported on his choice words that weren’t addressed to any particular player, but rather the whole team.
Rose explained that unless they want to continue to lose, the team “has to be on the same page.” He continued saying, “I think communication is huge. We’re quiet when we’re out there, and it’s leading to them getting easy baskets. We got to give a better effort. It seems like we’re not even competing, and it’s f—ing irritating.”
The team has been troubled by injuries, some of which have taken out key players. Rose himself recently returned after missing numerous game because of injury. Over the last three seasons he has only played a total of 50 regular season and playoff games. His transition, and those of newly added players, back on the court hasn’t been all that smooth, but Rose doesn’t believe any of those are valid excuses.
But, Rose isn’t the only one who thinks the team is struggling on their game. Thibodeau said that the team needs to decide they want to win.
“We’re not playing well in any aspect of the game, so we’re not giving ourselves a chance to win,” Thibodeau said. “Usually if you’re playing great defense and you’re rebounding the ball and keeping your turnovers down, you’re going to be in position to win no matter who you’re playing against, no matter where you’re playing. No matter who’s playing.
“But if you don’t do those three things, then you’re not going to be in position to win. We’ve been able to overcome injuries because we’ve been able to do that. Right now we’re not a multiple-effort team, we’re not concentrating, we’re not doing our job. We got to change that. We got to change it.”
The team took Tuesday off, and did not practice. Their next game is Thursday, Jan. 22 at home against the San Antonio Spurs.
