Outside of Disney’s usual animated features they also distribute the animated films for the popular Japanese Studio Ghibli films. Now they are bringing three of these beautiful films from Academy Award Winning Director and co-founder of the studio Hayao Miyazaki to Blu-ray including his 2013 Academy award nominated film The Wind Rises.
The film follows Jiro, who dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. Unlike a lot of filmmakers Miyazaki’s work just gets better and better with every film. This particular film is a fictional account of Jiro Horikoshi who designed the Mitsubishi A5M fighter an adapted from Miyazaki manga series. The film stands apart from some of his other films and steps away from the fantasy aspect and cements itself into actual history. From the moment this begins you can tell that there is something different about this one in comparison to some of the other anime films. Usually for these kinds of films to really capture the viewer attention they have to really step outside the box, but this is a story that could have been told just as easily as a live action film, but the masterful work he uses to create this film is beyond belief. The animation is as brilliant and vibrant as always, but the attention to detail is amazing and to look at and is a major necessity to make this story really deliver the impact it needs. In addition to the great story telling there are a lot of breathtaking moments involving the various planes that is perfectly executed and helps to elevate this film into a whole different world of animation. While some prefer the original Japanese audio track, the US version sports a great voice cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Martin Short, Stanley Tucci, Mandy Patinkin, Wernor Herzog, Jennifer Grey, and William H. Macy.
If you have never seen this or any of the other Studio Ghibli films from Hayao Miyazaki then this is the perfect chance for you to change the travesty in your life. If you have then you will no doubt want to add this beautiful film to your collection. In addition to the film, this Blu-ray also includes numerous special features including storyboards, Japanese trailers and TV spots, numerous featurettes, and more to make this a must have for any fan of Studio Ghibli.
