Why does a person continue to fall; continue to go backwards and continue to quit when they begin to move forward? Why does a person feel confused; get frustrated and fall into depression when they know that they have done something that they should not have done; said something that they should not have said or went someplace that they should not have gone? Why; because that is what happens when a person is divided, double-minded and two-faced.
“…he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:8 NKJV)
Trying to obey two set of rules, following two masters and going in two different directions…that is what a divided, double-minded and two-faced person is trying to do. This person is still trying to hold on to the devil’s way of thinking; the familiar way of living and the old way of talking. But this person has learned through God’s Word that they are a new creature; who is supposed to be renewing their mind; living a new life and having new conversations.
This person is half-stepping in their Christian walk; not wanting to give up everything; only willing to let go of some things. They refuse to surrender all; they just want to surrender some. So here we have a person sitting on a fence, with one leg in the world and one leg in the Word. You have this person who is divided, double-minded and two-faced…they don’t have two minds, but one mind that is split in half. The Word says that this person is unstable in all of their ways.
Unstable means unbalanced, uneven, wobbly, unsteady, insecure and changeable. So this person is not on a solid foundation and will continue to slip; backslide; lose focus; fall down, waver and bend. This person will continue to be frustrated, aggravated and irritated, because they feel like they are trying, but they keep falling.
This individual desires to have the sin of Satan, but the blessings of God; they are comfortable in the bondage of the devil, but they desire the freedom found in Christ. They are sitting on the fence, looking on both sides and trying to live in both worlds.
Their mind is split and they are sitting on the fence; looking back and forth, wobbling to and fro.
Let go and give in. Get off of the fence and choose One Master; one set of rules; and One direction. Choose God’s way and God’s Word; choose God’s Son and God’s path. Then your mind will be whole; your direction will be clear; your walk will be steady and your life will be stable. A person can’t live a double life, having their feet going in two different directions.
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other…” (Matthew 6:24)
“…How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him…” I Kings 18:21
Choose for yourselves this day, whom you will serve….as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
