Many businesses have realized the importance of social media and an online presence. Though not many businesses outside of the music and relationship industries took advantage of My Space, practically every major business industry has attempted to maximize Facebook. But many businesses came in rather late to the game. With Facebook continuing to update and alter its terms, some businesses are looking to other social media platforms. Ello is one of the newest kids on the social media block, and while individuals are clamoring to get onboard, it may not be the best choice for most businesses.
Ello currently does not allow advertising on its site. In multiple press releases, it has said that it has no intention of opening up to advertisers either. The hard line stance is actually what has drawn so many users to its base. They like the sleek look, and they like the fact that it is customized to users rather than businesses.
This doesn’t mean that Ello won’t allow you to participate if you do run a business. Artists, activists, and many small business owners participate on Ello regularly. They enjoy making connections, and they like the more sophisticated style of Ello. As a business owner, you’ll have to read lightly. They have lower tolerance than other social media platforms for even soft ads where the advertisement is couched in other useful information.
If you do decide to use Ello, you should focus your efforts on building relationships rather than making sales. Relationship building takes more time, but it has a greater payoff in the long run. Facebook ad promotions and advertisements on the walls and message boards may run about one promotional message per two non promotional messages. On Ello, it’s best to triple that or more.
If you’re hoping to get ahead of the curve in terms of social media, you may want to take a look at Ello. But you shouldn’t abandon Facebook yet. Ello is likely to become a significant player in some demographics, but it’s hard stance against ads makes it difficult to use to the same effect as Facebook or other social media platforms.
