Country superstar Tim McGraw appeared on the April 29 episode of the Dr. Oz Show to discuss the importance of diabetes prevention and management.
McGraw, who’s in the best shape of his life, has credited the low-carb Paleo diet and CrossFit workouts for his stunning 40-pound weight loss and rippling eight-pack abs, as Examiner has reported.
Tim recently partnered with the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness of diabetes prevention. “Thirty million Americans are living with diabetes,” McGraw told Dr. Oz.
Like many people, Tim said he has family members, friends and fans who are diabetic, so he wants to help educate the public about the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise to prevent diabetes and manage it if you already have the condition.
McGraw told Dr. Oz his favorite healthy recipes include green smoothies and a kale salad that has walnuts, pumpkin seeds, parmesan cheese, olive oil and lemon. Tim, who’s raising three daughters with wife and fellow country superstar Faith Hill, is on tour this summer.
McGraw said the secret to their happy marriage is that he and Faith don’t spend more than three days apart, even though they both travel a lot for work.
Many fans have noticed that McGraw has undergone a dramatic weight loss and health transformation during the past few years.
Tim, 48, is in the best shape of his life after giving up alcohol and drugs and adopting the low-carb Paleo diet and CrossFit workouts, Celebrity Health Fitness reported. The lifestyle overhaul resulted in a jaw-dropping 40-pound weight loss.
Tim Stopped Drinking and Went Paleo In 2008: Quickly Lost 40 Pounds
McGraw said he had an epiphany in 2008, when he realized his excessive drinking not only made him overweight, but was ruining his life.
When your wife tells you it’s gone too far, that’s a big wake-up call. That, and realizing you’re gonna lose everything you have. Not monetarily, not career-wise, but family-wise.
I drank too much. I partied too much. And I did other things too much. Chemically. No needles or that kind of stuff, but use your imagination.”
Tim said the turning point came when his three daughters began noticing the effect that drugs and alcohol had on him. “That’s enough to straighten you out,” he said.
McGraw stopped drinking in 2008 and adopted the Paleo diet, an alcohol-free diet that emphasizes high-quality animal proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, and excludes gluten, sugar, dairy, legumes, and processed foods.
In addition to going Paleo, the country superstar embarked on an intense workout program that includes CrossFit, running, weight-lifting and basketball.
McGraw’s CrossFit workouts incorporate kettlebell swings, hammer strikes, tire flips, sled pulling, and strength-training with martial-arts expert Roger Yuan, who trains “James Bond” star Daniel Craig.
“We work with pulleys, bars and do core training, strength and balanced movements to build up the muscles between the ribs and connective tissues,” said Yuan. “I have trained a lot of people, and many are hard workers. But Tim is another animal. There is no quitting in him.”
The resulting 40-pound weight loss has given Tim the body of an athlete, and he now has rippling 8-packs for the first time in his life — at age 48. Even McGraw is stunned by his transformation. “I was looking at some old concert shots the other day. Man, my gut!” he laughed.
